Edit - I received a lot of messages asking about the details of the mentor and sessions. It was a paid coaching service for interview preparation, I attended all the sessions she recommended me. Happy to connect you. I received data science offers from Google and Facebook, and I want to take a moment to thank this community and especially thank my mentor for coaching and guiding me at every step (not sure if she is on this platform though). My journey I started preparing for DS roles 1.5 years ago not knowing what it takes to get there. I was working on data analysis, insight generation, and ML. I thought I was good at it. I studied sql from leetcode, product from online pmmanagement exercises, and ab testing from udacity. Interviewed second half of 2020 and got rejected from Microsoft, Facebook. For most companies, I struggled to get interview calls. With referrals I received a few calls but all of them were rejects. I bought leetcode premium and solved 60+ sql questions which helped me gain confidence. But product, ab testing, and open ended data questions were still a problem. Statistics was ok, not great. Earlier this year I found myself debating if I should look for ML roles or product DS roles. I found my mentor in May 2021 and speaking with her made me realize I didn’t know what I didn’t know. I attended her classes from May to July, made notes, and completed almost 10 mocks with her in Aug. It made me stronger with fundamentals and she also explained how to answer interview questions. I also read a lot of blind posts about DS interviews and even spoke with a few people who gave me good insight about the interview process. 4 months fast forward I am writing this post sitting on a hilltop with a beautiful view, feeling relaxed after receiving offers from two top tech companies. It has been a tough journey trying to get into DS at top tech companies but I am glad it has ended well. My advice 1. Keep trying and learning, you will get there 2. Find a good mentor because you don’t know what you don’t know. I can’t thank my mentor enough for her sessions and all the personalized feedback she gave me. 3. Interviewing is hard, don’t go underprepared. It’s a lost chance and rejections also affect your confidence negatively 4. DS needs a lot of aspects - product, statistics, ML, ab testing, data manipulation. Don’t underestimate any of it 5. This is an awesome community, talk to others and understand the process before you jump into it Current TC - 148k New TC - 320k from Google, haven’t received FB numbers
