If you had an option to choose 800k tc at Meta Or Pre-seed ai startup (only 3 people where each member was a founding engineer of YouTube, OpenAI, Instagram - engineer #1 - enginner #4) Where would you go? Upside for the startup is more than 80M if it IPOs
You can go back to meta in a year if stuff goes sideways
how can any of us know the answer when we don’t know what the start up is based on….
Rich founders won’t be as motivated
How much savings do you have? At 800k TC you can grind for a year or two and go back to Meta if you wish. How much equity are you getting in the preseed startup
Depends on where you are in life. If you have already stashed a Million or two, going with Meta won’t be any life changing (both good and bad); I’d go with startup for life changing wealth opportunity and adventure. If you are still saving up for your comfortable cushion, Meta it is!
Founding engineer isn’t the same as founder, and startup equity upside rarely makes financial sense (in EV terms) compared to senior FAANG roles unless you’re a founder. Pick Meta if you value money, pick the startup role if you’re indifferent to money and strongly prefer the work
^this. Plus, many rockstar engineers didn’t end up as successful as they hoped with their startups. There are just too many variables so risk is too high compared to a solid $800k.
It depends on how long I’ve made 800k. I’ll give it 2 or 3 years at that TC before jumping.
Go for startup
Meta isn't exactly stable.
