Going to be terminated by June. If I quit now can I still apply for unemployment?

Work has been beyond stressful and I’m burned out, also don’t feel being appreciated so I’m mentally checked out lately (used to get up at 5am to attend 7am meeting, super motivated). I am going to get let go too as I’m not boss’s favorite and his budget is getting cut. I don’t want to coast, or see “group politics” ruin projects. I’d rather quit now and focus on positive things, apply for jobs at better teams/companies. Just not sure if I need a few months gap time and if I can get unemployment to support me during that time?

generally no. However, in some cases yes and you have to prove.also varies by state

Stay

You generally don't qualify for unemployment if you quit. Wait it out until you are let go

Thanks guys! Wow this is such a warm community. My first post as I was stressed out but this clarified what I should in the next month. Thank you!

Isn’t this what quiet quitting was invented for?

Hahaha, I noticed I started rolling my eyes at big zoom meetings… gotta be careful

Would you recommend OP skipping all meetings? That might fast track getting fired

btw, termination for cause may disqualify from unemployment.

Try and find some separation documentation for your company where it defines “cause”. Being fired for “cause” disqualifies you from unemployment in CA, but “cause” is a legal term of art that is a really high bar. You not performing well enough that you get fired or terminated is (usually) NOT “cause” so if you take it easy until you are let go then you should still be able to get unemployment. But all this goes out the window if you quit. Also, unemployment is capped at $450 a week for upto 26 weeks (after 1 week probation period) until you get a job. So you can do the math on trading off your peace of mind / mental health vs the paltry unemployment benefit in CA. May be better in other states.
