The final round for a C-suite position was with the HM, a mid-20s executive. Not so sharp, doesn’t have a super 3 YOE career, not the best communication skills. On the other side of the table, a late-40s professional with 20 YOE under the belt, experience working for multiple Fortune 20 companies, leading cross-regional teams, and bringing millions of revenues. The offer they sent was pretty decent, 25% increase in TC but 40% increase in the cash portion. The vibes in the company feel good, energetic, fun, fast paced, etc. However, that age gap to the boss has been a real concern. Dignity maybe, prestige, fear of him being bossy, uneducated, unexperienced, not a good leader. Thoughts? TC 320k
You are the 40s and your hiring manager is the 20s?
Yes
How do you know they’re not so sharp?
The way they talk about the company, the role, the need, their presentation skills, the way they answer questions, etc.
so you were interviewing for a Csuite role and the hiring manager was an executive in his/her 20s? were they the CEO? (isnt that who Csuite generally report to?). is it a start up and are they the founder?
Not the founder. Not sure if related to the founders.
but is the CEO?
You sound like a bad fit for the position.
Thank you. Why?
You have an ego issue. If you’re already struggling to respect this person and their role in the org, you won’t survive in the position reporting to them.
I'm about your age and I wouldn't have a problem to work for a boss in mid 20's. See if you have anything to learn from the role and manager and see if it's for you to go through any potential hiccups. I interviewed with a guy at McKinsey (industry-specific, not MBA route), and the guy literally had 12 years less than me. He did get a Princeton PhD at 18yo so there is that lol. I didn't get the job, but if I did I would have accepted.

It sounds like a great opportunity as long as you manage up well and understand that there may be areas where you have to lead your boss a bit
