I'm currently working in Toronto, and recently got a job offer from a NYC based company they are offering 150K base for the DS role. Do you feel this is low balling? Would I be able to save money after expenses? Currently have no major expenses apart from rent, utilities, phone, and Internet bill. TC: 150K CAD
If you’re planning to rent out a single room for $2k/month $150 is good
Thats not possible in Manhattan and most of Brooklyn. Possible in queens, jersey city, etc.
@Block single room man not studio
What is your TC for the new role? You have to add up everything but not just your base. And how many YOE you have?
Not really! Cash is the one paying for expenses, RSU doesn't help with rent or credit card bills! As a matter of fact, its tax will eat up the cash.
RSUs can be sold for cash and used to pay for expenses too?
It’s low for NYC. You won’t be able save anything
How many YOE? Is the NYC company worthwhile to have on your resume? Are they sponsoring your Visa etc? Where are you in your career? What do you do on free time? Too many missing details to give proper advice. Initial thoughts: Seems low especially if they’re going to pay you in CAD. It’s equivalent to 108K USD. Either CAD 150K and work remote from Canada or USD 120-150K and relocate to NYC. Cost of living in NYC is higher than Toronto.
They are paying me in USD. I'm tryna understand if it is better to stay at my current job or make the move. So YOE shouldn't matter. I'm currently a DS with 5 YOE. I had a slow start in my life. Dont judge.
150k USD is more than enough to live comfortably in NYC and save
I made 150K in NYC in 2019 renting a 1br apartment in Brooklyn and I can tell you, you won't have an easy life in NYC on that salary in 2024.
Oof
150k CAD in YYZ >>>> 150k USD in NYC

$150k salary, could give you $80-90k in hand after taxes, max 401k contributions, health insurance premiums, and hsa contributions. So, that leaves you with ~$6500/month in hand.
Do you want to live alone? Which borough? These two questions will really determine if you’re able to save $
we cannot tell you if it’s a lowball offer without knowing what the company or even the level is. Is 150k a lowball for a staff DS at Meta? yes. Is it a low ball for an entry level role at bank of america? lol no, you’re getting overpaid. The city alone doesn’t warrent you shit. It depends on the role, company, and level
My question is whether I'll be able to save with this salary given I have average expenses. Just trying to get an idea before I move there.
If someone asked me if 150K CAD is a good enough salary for Toronto, I can tell it's a great salary for a single person. As simple as that.
