The man I love hates me because I’m Vietnamese
L6 SWE at Google, 3 young kids. Happy enough, but TC difference vs FB is starting to get significant, even putting aside inflation. If I go for it and retention doesn't pan out, am I going to regret trading WLB for the extra comp? My only friends at FB don't have kids so can't really answer the question.
I would only make the hop if you feel like your current TC cannot support and give you and your family the life you want. I think that would be selfless and anything more would be ego driven.
What? Why do you think that?
No one goes hungry, the kids have birthday parties, but something like a Disney trip would be hard. I am nowhere near running out of ways to spend money.
I would say staying at Google is better option. Changing jobs and worse WLB takes toll on your relationship and your kids. Your making extra money at the cost of other relationships just know that. If you don’t value wlb that much and care only about tc, then fb may be better option.
New father here. Generally speaking, FB is not a good place for WLB because we are still heavily skewed toward singles and people with no kids; and as you know very well; they have no clue how hard It is to work beyond 8 hours!! But, if you come in and find a team that majority are older (infra teams mostly), you could be fine.
Thanks, good tip about infra.
Manager here, we’re actually incentivized to promote wlb because it’s better for so many reasons (well-being, retention, etc), but a lot of the crazy hours is self imposed, I’m guilty of this myself. If you join now, you won’t have to do PSCs until around Dec 2022, and if you’re goal is to meet expectations, get a $200k ish refresh, it is very doable.
Why not get offer from FB and use it to get counter offer at Google?
That would be Plan A, but not gonna do that if I'm not willing to walk away.
Worst idea. You will just ruin your relationship with manager
Given tc is your motivation it helps to know your current tc or what difference we are talking about
This person is too polite to say TC or GTFO 😂
525 vs 650
A bit surprised your G TC isn’t higher than FB given how much GOOG has grown in the past 2 years. When did you join Google?
More than 4 years ago
But I haven't been staff for 4 years
If you join at level > 6, you should be fine. Wlb is very much team and management dependent. I have 2 kids and am able to manage working 9 to 5.
What about joining at lower levels?
Why is <= L5 worst?
TC or GTFO
525
If you can't do life in NYC with 3 kids on 525 you need a budget and a financial planner.
And yes, WLB, on average, is *significantly* worse than Google. That doesn’t mean it absolutely will be worse, but why take that chance? Is the extra 20-30k/year post tax really worth spending less time with your family????
It's not just 20-30k post tax. You're right that wouldn't be worth it. Thanks for the WLB info.
At the amounts of money you already make, once you start trying to figure out the TC vs family trade off you are going down a dangerous road. For context, I’m an M2 at FB and also have young kids and I’m leaving FB for a company with much better WLB and a 15% pay cut. I rather spend more time with my family now than be able to retire 2-3 years earlier when they are already in their teens.
TC
Or gtfo
