Hey I got moved through to a panel round for Google. It’s an L6 marketing analytics role in the Google cloud org. Wanted to see if I could get comp feedback. The range in the JD for base was 151-232k, the recruiter initially said the role is 176k + bonus (20% OTE) + stock (didn’t elaborate). Do you think I can push for >200k base + bonus + 100k/yr stock? Should my ask be different? Internet specs are all over the place but i fee like $300-$350k tc is reasonable. But I’m also a terrible negotiator and Google cloud is supposed to pay a lot so I don’t want to leave anything on the table. I’m based in SF and have 12 yoe
Look on levels.fyi L6 engineers get 230k salary + 200k rsu per year and 20% bonus
L6 marketing base should be around 200k up to 210 ish but that's getting closed to the top of the band for L6. Overall 350-380k is possible but again top of the band. Do you have any competing offers or a strong fallback to be able to negotiate that? My recommendation to you is to ask for, say, 360-380k TC, say that reflects the value you bring, and tell them you're flexible in how they make it happen (base, stock etc). Dont let them pigeonhole you into asking for specific salary, specific stock etc. Good luck
No competing offer yet, but I feel like the market has been turning over the past couple weeks as I’ve been starting to get reached out to more. Excellent advice re: negotiation and flexibility on how they reach tc. Thanks!
This was recommended to me by a pro Google recruiter friend in the past 👌 always happy to pass it on. Even if you have no competing offers stay grounded in the value and expertise you bring. Good luck 🤞
You will need a competitive offer to get them to negotiate up at all. Time it well and it can work out for you, but 200K is high for non-tech L6 even in SF. Expect zero percent raises for several years if you get this. Best of luck!
I personally know two people who negotiated 380k L6 TC in marketing but that was 2021. Not sure what the situation is now. Neither had a competing offer but Google really wanted them because they had great background
@op, congrats on the offer. Google is a dream company for me. Can I dm you? I have similar background. Would love to get some pointers. Am around 240 at Amazon L6 Mktg
You're in for a world of disappointment with those expectations.
L6 in non tech roles are around L5 tech pay. So 350k is def possible, but you’ll need leverage. Competing offers from big tech will do it. If you don’t have those, you probably top out at 300k if you have excellent negotiation skills
This is only when you're close to the line of business and revenue generating. Not marketing which is more or less a cost center.
Nope. You need competing offers. Google doesnt entertain negotiations when candidate has nothing in their hand
Lol 300k TC for marketing. Not bloated at all
For TC? I was at ~260k in a prior role as I have pretty good experience in strategy and analytics; know how across the ops side and execution is actually kind of rare on the marketing side. But only time will tell!
You won't ever get the opportunity to ask. You'll only get told, should you make it far enough. It's of course you decision how to proceed from there. Generally, you'll need to have a competing offer(s) or be of a protected class to have any chance of negotiating.
No way you are getting 230k base for this role. You can target close to 200k max. Google is cheap when it comes to base, so focus n push on the RSU.
Yea I think 230+ bonus for the cash portion would be a stretch. I was trying to push for 200 base, which the bonus is pretty solid. The recruiter also said “more flexibility on the rsu portion”. Do you have any idea (ball park) what I should push for on the RSU side? 100k/yr?
They may match your first year comp to 350k but I don’t think you can avg out 350k for 4 years. Lower your expectation or have another competing offer. This isn’t 2021 or early 2022 market. I also see you still have your panel. So try to nail it and wait for official offer.
