This is a Customer Engineering role on GCP. Also known as Sales Engineering in other firms. I was wondering if this is a good career path to choose for a person coming from a Software Dev background. I want to remain in the tech space but not necessarily be involved with hands on coding. That’s one of the reasons why this role seemed attractive to me. Is anyone here currently working in this role and can help me with the following questions - 1) What does the career progression look like and what options does one have (career wise) few years down the line? 2) How’s the work life balance and the pressure to meet targets? 3) Are there higher chances of being laid off in this line of work?
1. You can move onto PM, TPM roles afterwards. But it’ll be hard to go back to a pure dev role 2. Work hour can be long as customers are often in a different time zone. 3. Higher chance of being laid off indeed, as most companies value dev higher than CE. And harder to find similar roles in other companies as CE only exist when organizations and business has scaled to a certain level
Thanks for your reply, are you currently working in a similar role? So regarding point 3, is it worth taking the plunge?
I worked as CE at a semiconductor company previously, and now I’m a TPM. I felt point #3 hard as I was laid off after 7+ years as aCE, and had a difficult time finding a new job.

Can you give any insight into the interview and offer? I’m extremely interested in this role at google
* First phone screening round with the recruiter. * Next, three hangout interviews - 1. Behavioral 2. Problem Solving 3. System Design * If you clear they have an onsite interview to demo a system architecture using GCP and one Googlyness interview. I haven't got an offer yet.
What is your years experience in work related to the job, I’m thinking client facing work but I could be wrong on what they look for. And thanks for responses
