Hello fellow Data people! I'm interviewing for Google "Data Scientist, Engineering" role, but the initial feedback is weak on Stats, but ok on Data Intuition, Coding, and Communication. Now, recruiter recommended switching to interviewing for "Product Analyst, Data Science role" role for on-site, but leaving the option for DSE open as well. I guess I'm a borderline pass in technical screen... Options: 1. Try getting in through PA first, and internally transfer later. 2. Keep interviewing for DSE. I have an offer which allows me to gain relevant experience in DS, but the pay and company culture don't match Google. I'll try DSE again in 1-2 years. Questions: 1. How different will the difficulty levels be for the 2 roles? 2. Is it possible that when I fail the DSE onsite, they still let me try PA on-site? Background: * Career goal: eventually do more ML, so DSE sounds like where I want to be * Reality: I only have MS in STEM, while PhD in Stats seems to be a better fit for what DSE is looking for. It will take a while for me to catch up. * Priorities: Growth (technical expertise) >> stability >> TC For folks voted on continuing DSE, could you share some insights? THX!
How was your initial screening round ?
Hi @nightSun, I also got an interview request for one of the two roles available. Data Scientist, Engineering and Product Analyst, Data Science. Could you please tell about your interview experience? What all topics were asked in the technical phone interview? What topics should I study? TIA!
PA will take you further from you goal. You will be doing a lot of data wrangling, analytics and dashboarding. DS is more stats heavy, many have PhD stats. ML is often done by SWE, some DS works on ML too but not all - depends on the team. If you prioritize learning, I recommend DS or not Google at all. PA shouldn’t be an option. I used to be PA but moved to DS at G. Feel free to DM me if you have other questions.
For folks asking about DSE interview questions - there will be statistics, data intuition, python programming, and asking about your project experience.
Hi, was your Python question leetcode style, or an implementation of statistical methods, or Pandas style data manipulation?
What type of stats questions?
Hi Moody's ... Would it be possible for you to share the full DSE experience? Looks like there isn't much about it on i ternet. Thanks.
Hi OP, did you apply for Google India?
Bump - please comment for why you suggest one over the other!
