Working at Amazon Toronto Office for about 5 years now. Been at L5 for almost two years. Delivered a variety of high impact projects, acting as practically as a senior engineer in my team. Recently got through Google hiring committee, and my recruiter told me I was approved for L3 at Google (in Mountain View), which is equivalent to L4 at Amazon (new grad). I've heard Google low-balls in terms of leveling (have seen it happen to a friend), but lumping me with a bunch of fresh grads seems like disrespect... AMA and tell me what you think? What would you do in this situation? TC 160-200k CAD
What's the offer?
It’s all a matter of how much you are willing to sell your soul to sacrifice for this ‘prestige’ you think you’ll get at Google working with freshers(even though in 2019 this is no longer a tier 1 or even tier 2 company...) I know people with 7+ that went as L3 and 10+ as L4.. they were bottom performers here..
3 yoe in FANG also leveled at 3. Don't come. Go to FB
Damn, is this normal practice?
DM I will let you know why
Don't accept. Google had been doing this to lots of people. Literally everyday there is a post like this; I don't know why they do it. Go to one of many companies that will respect you.
FB also will down level and promise quick promotion up
No; if anything, FB is relatively generous with leveling.
Don't do it. If you can get a higher level at a different company, take that instead. Google underlevels people and there's no benefit to you, even if recruiter promises you you'll get promoted quickly.
Dont take it, I am l6 equivalent with 11yoe and they offered me l3 today. Google is a fucking joke company.
Dont do it. Show some self respect ✊
The kiss of death. Fuck. Them. Save yourself years of resentment and don’t do it unless TC exceeds your current TC by 15% or more.
You may appear again for interview at google after 12 months and try to do better than your previous performance.
