Google HC rejection

What are some of the reasons that HC might reject a candidate? The interviews go well and only then the candidate is submitted to HC. Does the HC read granular details of interview feedback? Do they review the candidate experience and resume? Are there considerations around diversity, age etc? Are 2 candidates for similar roles compared with each other? Apologies for so many questions! just that the whole HC thing is such a black box so trying to understand. @Google

How do you know the interviews went well ?

VMware ldudvfnf OP Dec 5, 2019

Recruiter said they are starting HC and team matching for me in parallel. So i am assuming the interviewers gave good feedback?

Google Mvrck9 Dec 5, 2019

Nope. I don't think it means that. 5 SH for e.g. is one end of the spectrum, 5SNH would be the other, everything else is up in the air. In some cases internal references may help someone if HC is on the fence.

Google is past it's prime. Go somewhere else

VMware ldudvfnf OP Dec 5, 2019

Really? Why do you think so? I still see Google winning all the polls on Blind.

Was there for a while. Waste of time. No clear path to career growth and way too much popularity contest type behaviors

Oh wow! Thats a scary percentage! Are you at Google? What is the source of this number?

VMware ldudvfnf OP Dec 5, 2019

I also read in some other posts that it usually helps at HC if you have strong internal referrals... but my recruiter never asked for any comments from the Google employees I know.

Yes, HC does read granular details of interview feedback. Or at least they did a few years ago when I was working for Google: I was never on an HC but I did a bunch of interviews, and HC members would give me meta-feedback on my interview feedback that generally indicated they were digging pretty deep into the details. In general, Google's hiring process is designed to minimize the chance of a bad hire at the cost of risking rejecting people who would have been good hires. If any one interviewer expresses serious concerns about your suitability to be hired by Google, then unless other interviewers gave specific feedback about the same concern that convinced the committee it wasn't a problem, then you're very likely to be rejected by the HC. Also, unless they've changed the process since I was there, everyone who gets an on-site interview loop gets submitted to the hiring committee. If their interviews clearly went badly (e.g. everyone gave a "no hire" recommendation), the HC probably doesn't spend much time on deciding to reject you, but the decision still goes through the hiring committee. You may be thinking of the Executive Committee, which assigns career level and offer package to candidates who have been approved by the HC. EC can also veto candidates outright despite HC recommending hire, but that's pretty rare.

I have heard only if the interview feedback is mostly good, the candidate packet is sent to HC.

VMware ldudvfnf OP Dec 7, 2019

I dont think all candidates are sent to HC. Atleast thats what most Blind posts indicate. Also the rejection rate at HC stage is still high even though only good candidates are sent there. Do you know if they also look at your past experience, visa status etc to make a decision?

Wtf is this interview feedback, HC/EC mumbo jumbo ? If you did leetcode well and talked well, is that not enough ? They're not marrying you. Interviews already put you in a mould so what's left to discuss ? You fill it - in, you don't - out. Whoever designed that process must have been a stuck up anal person.

VMware ldudvfnf OP Dec 7, 2019

Hehe... the process is certainly different from other companies! From what i understand, it is because they want to maintain the same bar in hiring across the board. Also as a candidate we don’t have much of a choice but to try to clear every step in the process!

Google Mvrck9 Dec 7, 2019

It's not mumbo jumbo :) As an interviewer, I'm forced to write as objective a feedback as possible regardless of how good or bad I'm feeling that day. The feedback contains actual code that the candidate wrote and / or things they said. I've done more than 100 interviews at Google and I've only been surprised at the final outcome maybe 2 times. Also, once the HC makes a decision, all interviewers get to see what the other interviewers said and how they rated - helps provide feedback for newer interviewers.

OP, did you hear back?

VMware urbdnfh Dec 17, 2019

OP here. They have asked me to come for another interview. The recruiter said sometimes they don’t have enough info to make a decision! Or i am very borderline :-(
