Passed HC and received a verbal offer from Google recently in a hardware profile. Base: 130K RSUs: 160K/4 No sign-on Bonus: 15% Expected TC: 202K The work at Google seems to be quite impactful, and exciting right now, though I’m not sure the organization is as experienced as my org at Apple. I’m looking to learn though since I’m still early in my career, and I might be getting that at Google since there will be room to experiment. Currently ICT2 at Apple, but expecting a promotion to ICT3. TC: 150K YOE: 2 Should I leave Apple or stay back? #hardware #offer
If you like the work your team does as well as the team/manager itself, it may be better to stay where you are. No need to change for the sake of changing.
I do like the team and manager, but work is getting routine because we need to adhere to the strict project cycles
What’s your background and which org are you at apple?
I’m with HWTech. I have a BS in Computer Engineering.
I am not familiar with HWTech. Which components/products do you work on. I would say from a career perspective Apple HW >>> Google HW. You also get more visibility at apple compared to google. There is also a question of personality. If you are assertive and don’t mind working with tough coworkers, then stay at apple.
You didn’t say why you are leaving your current job. Is there somethingyou don’t like about it? If yes then take the new offer. If answer is no, then get what u can experience wise from the current job before moving
I do like my current job. It gets routine, and hectic during project signoff, but it’s not unbearable. The question is, where I’d get to learn more. I’m also wondering if I can defer the Google offer by a year, don’t want to have to go through hiring committee again. Any suggestions on how to do that?
Deferring is not possible. I have not heard anyone getting that option.
Have similar YOE as OP, was able to negotiate RSU to 250k so you can probably ask for more there. Recruiter said that Google is more flexible with RSU than base/sign-on.
Get promoted first.
Stay. Apple pays better
Thanks everyone for your replies. One main reason I’m considering Google is the WLB there. It’s not uncommon for colleagues on my team at Apple to work weekends, regardless of whether we have a deadline coming up or not. It also seems like Google is pumping in a huge amount of money into building its in-house design team, so I don’t want to miss being an early member of the team. I’d really like someone’s input on whether I’m right in thinking that way.
Do they expect you to work on weekends without a deadline coming up? Do you feel compelled to work on weekends to keep up your ratings? If you don’t enjoy doing this you should certainly explore other options. If the work is repetitive then you will anyways not improve your knowledge.
There’s no formal expectation from my team to work. But there’s always email going around, and I feel that if I don’t work on weekends, I won’t be able to catch up. I certainly don’t want to constantly have work in the back of my mind on weekends, and work is a little repetitive. So, I’m considering the Google offer where it seems like there will be more freedom to move.
OP, mind sharing your TC breakdown? Is it common for people in HWT to stay at ICT2 for 2 years? (I'm a new grad in the same org)
Base: 120K Stock: 25K Bonus: 5K I joined early last year, so I couldn’t make enough of an impact before the review. It’s common to stay at ICT2 for two years, if you’re a new grad. That’s what I’ve heard from the more experienced colleagues on my team.
What projects are you going to work on at Google? You should think about the project scope, roles, and responsibilities. Apple is a great place to learn when you start. I interned at Apple and moved to Google full-time. It was a struggle for me at an early stage of Google HWPA (now called service and devices org)
I would say I have learned a lot at Apple. Based on my meeting with the manager, he has said that there’s exciting work in the pipeline, and has given me an idea of what the team has worked on in the past. How was your experience at Google compared to Apple? I really do want to learn more about that. Also, why would you say Google wouldn’t be a good place to learn?
I really liked the Apple experience and learned a lot, but it was very stressful and had a bad last-minute intern manager which drove me away from Apple. Google was nice and the people are friendly, however, there is no real pressure and you get comfortable. It really depends on what you want to do.
It’s a low ball considering you are close to ICT3 at Apple. Try to negotiate for 145k, 40k sign on bonus and 200k RSU. It is possible for 2YOE
Tried negotiating more, but the recruiting is saying the comp team won’t budge. Only a competing offer might do the trick
Yeah I can also affirm that for HW 2 YoE the only way you'll get higher is with a competing offer. This was very close to my initial G offer.
