Google Kirlkand vs Microsoft

Apr 5, 2019 26 Comments

I have an offer from Msft for an L65 PM role and will be getting one from Google shortly for an L6 TPM role. The Google role is with their GCP central capacity planning team, Msft with their SharePoint OneDrive team. I don't know Google's offer yet. So far I really like the team and manager at msft, but haven't met the team at Google's Kirkland office. When I asked about doing that, the request was ignored.

Aside from the benefits and comp, any insight into how interesting the work is at Google GCP capacity planning? Is it primarily new region planning? Any thoughts on growth areas there and whether and why you'd choose msft vs Google?

Moving on-prem to cloud doesn’t mean they are getting rid of on-prem and all it’s legacy baggage. You need to ask about dev tooling and quality of dev experience.

I have worked in this group. True for the most part.

Google is what I would vote for since better culture and comp.

MS had a total comp of 440 the first year, then 360 after that. Google was 399, then 330 after that.

I dont see a TC jump here given refreshers are poor at MS (the 360 will further go down at 4 yr cliff) and TC dips is quite a bit at G. Still considering the move?

Culture and perks way better at Google. Behind on cloud and understaffed though so not as cushy as other parts of Google. Quality of coworkers on average is better at Google which makes working with them less frustrating. New leadership and lots of change if you can stomach that vs relative stability at Microsoft. I would expect L6 Google comp to be much better than L65. Also of note is Google Cloud team will be consolidated to SLU office later this year.

Haha. Really ? A co-worker just joined Kirkland Google cloud and was bragging about his reduced commute ...

He is going to be pissed if this is true. :)

The SLU office will be the Google Cloud office. You could probably get an exception and work from Fremont or Kirkland if you wanted to

I wouldn’t join SharePoint OneDrive team, it’s not a very career advancing group anymore.

What is your level in Amazon ? The comp is amazing.

That is dumb if they ignore your request. You can't make a decision based on blind feedback. I would talk to the hiring manager and understand the scope of work before making a decision.

Currently L6 at Amazon. I was able to talk to the hiring manager on the phone, just not meet the people I'd be working with daily on site. The scope seems good enough, but the team is the unknown.

@hsosyeno is right. Ignoring your request would be a red flag to me. I don’t know much about the team but being in deep learning, there was a lot of aggressive recruiting for me, and in the end I chose the team with the people I enjoyed being around.

I look at it as, if you’re a strong candidate, more experience will only make you stronger, and leaving to a diff company will always be an option for top candidates.

Capacity planning is a bit of a shit show, I’ll be honest. I don’t know much about sharepoint team but I think the perks at google make it the better choice. You get free shit and can just ignore people when the shit hits the fan
