EDIT: IT WAS FOR L4 NOT L3. I didn’t realize SWE III means L4. Just had my second phone screen for L3 in NYC. It was easy and I crushed it - solved the problem + two follow ups with no hints. Today my recruiter emailed me: “After multiple reviews of your application, we unfortunately do not have a team match available that best aligns with your skill set and location preference at this time” - This doesn’t sound like I failed the interview, so if I have a passing score can I use that to get an onsite for other roles? - Can I request L4 since I have a few YOE under my belt? Feeling crushed because Google is my dream company. Would appreciate any advice on my options. Current: IC3 (senior MTS) at Oracle YOE: 3.5 TC: 250k
You got downlevel’d from Senior to New Grad? Yikes
Yeah :/ I applied to both L3 and L4 and only got L3 interviews. I know Google famously down-levels so I expected it. Figured I’d be gunning for promotion in a year
Promotion in a year is a big trap recruiters will tell you to take the down level. 1.5-2.5 years seems more accurate these days. Too many people taking downlevels == bar getting raised for L3 to L4 / cost cutting measure. Trust me i took the downlevel and regretted it. Grew the most as an engineer here so far but dont come in chasing a fast promo or youll be unhappy Good part is L3 depending on COL can match your current TC
Sorry to say it but sounds like to got rejected. If you wanna confirm if you met the bar of the interview ask if you failed the interview or passed it. If it makes you feel any better I know others who have had a similar experience.
I am trying to tm as L4 for G NYC for 2y
it is always worth trying to negotiate a role by changing requirements.. they mention preferred location… are you open to moving elsewhere maybe? can you share how long it took for a recruiter for reach out after clearing the hiring assessment & the timeline afterwards until receiving this update?
I wouldn’t move but I’d be fine with a fully remote role. Think they’d take that? I passed HA Feb 16, recruiter reached out Feb 21, had first phone screen March 11 and second phone screen April 6.
3.5 years exp and getting a grad role 🪦
