Hello guys! I recently had my L7 virtual onsite interviews with Google and based on the feedback from the recruiter, the hiring committee rejected my application and upon further research he was able to find out that in the system design rounds they were looking for little more depth/ details and for coding round they were expecting even a better optimal solution. And when asked him if I can be considered for L6 instead, he tried to follow up with HC and shared that HC is not in support to downgrade me for L6 as they want me to try again for L7 in 6-8 months. So based on the above feedback am not sure if I did well in these interviews but missed by a close margin or totally failed so that I can prepare accordingly. Also am not sure if I need to start again from step-1 when I apply next time. Any feedback from Google folks or anyone who had a similar experience would be of great help with my preparation for my next try. Thanks in advance! YOE: 16 Current Level: L7 #google #googleinterview
Usually they downlevel if it was a close
At l7 they don’t downgrade , downgrading happens at lower levels .. u missed by a margin Prepare well and try again . How were your rounds - behavioral , org strategy ? Product strategy ? How were the questions
They most certainly do downgrade lol
Rounds I had: Coding (LC hard) googliness System design System design Technical leadership round
Personally I felt like the system design rounds went really well as I heard words like great, perfect etc. during these rounds from the panel members which made me think I was on the right track but due to the nature of the questions and the time slot I wasn’t sure how much detail I should be getting into. Just wanted to share this as well.
Some positions, team strictly looks for L7. They don’t want to downgrade. That seems to be the case.
What's your current level/YOE? Are you a specialist? How did you get L7 interview?
Any generic questions on system design... like design twitter, url shortener, etc or where they internal use cases which needed a solution
Did you ask the recruiter about what step you’d start from and any hints on what and where you could improve? Given that they didn’t want to downgrade to L6, it indicates they think you’re short of an L7 by a small margin.
I would disagree as if doubt in HC, they downlevel instead of reject. To reject means you didn’t clear either
