Starting a hardware role at Google and need to choose a laptop. Have narrowed it down but having trouble trouble deciding between a 13" Macbook Pro or a Lenovo X1 Carbon w/ Linux. Options don't really present the specs of each choice. Have been told that the team uses a mix of Linux and ChromeOS. Am particularly interested in experiences using VPN / compatibility issues. Well crap. This might have been a useless poll (essentially a referendum on OSX vs Linux) or the community is just as conflicted as I am. I'm tempted to go with the Mac just because then I know I'll get essentially instant-on functionality. My experience with linux laptops is outdated, but I don't remember any having an equally low power, yet instant on, sleep function.
You get precisely the same experience with Linux now. that said, the Googler majority has macs, so you get slightly better support and less bugs/person
Get a MacBook. You will run a fat linux VM in the cloud.
What sort of hardware? Hardware engineering tends to be exclusively windows so you'd then just get a Windows exception approval when joining.
People need to start specifying the domain
Do you also get an option to choose the latest 16” model with M1 chip Macbook Pro?
