I was recently hired 6 months ago(non-tech role). I got put in SCI first week of November and was told oh all nooglers are going on it for better support. I was pretty surprised since no mention of not performing well till then but manager said it’s not a big deal don’t worry about it. I was about to go on a 3 week leave in November (which i told them about before i was hired) and i came back to work in december. I had 3 weeks of time before my performance review came up to improve. I worked and completed (80%) of the stuff he put on my support check in. Year end conversation happens and i’m being told i’m getting a low rating (2/5) with not a lot of explanation. My manger just said not a big deal his first year at google he didn’t get a good performance review either. he told me not to worry. He said low rating doesn’t really impact me much just comp multipliers will be low. Today I was the only person in my team that was laid off. I can’t help but think it was performance related. I used to meet with my manger 3x a week and he never mentioned anything of being a low performer till SCI. when i was put on SCI i cranked that up to 5x a week to make sure i meet my goals by the end of the year. I STILL got a low rating. I’m so incredibly heartbroken. Google was my dream company, I prayed so much to be here and to be let go despite my efforts ugh. I feel so isolated I can’t help but think i didn’t play google politics well enough. None of my coworkers even texted me today to check in. My manger called and had a 3min conversation of oh i had no idea this was happening. i believe him. His manger called me and i know she had good intentions but was making jokes while i was crying on the phone. It’s my first layoff in my career so can’t help but take it personally. Just wanted to rant. Anyways if anyone is hiring on finance please let me know! Tc:0 (was 120k) YOE: 4##tech
Good that you got it out from you. I.e.rant.
Top performers have been laid off too. And yes almost none of the managers knew this was coming
I’m sorry you have to go through all this. 😢
And the sorry thing about that was I was just thinking of it I don’t think
Honestly no one knows. It may be performance related and it may not. I’ve seen people with lots of tenure let go. And people who I thought were performing well too. FWIW your manager probably had no clue until this morning too.
So incredibly rude. What’s wrong with being grateful for what you have and appreciating where you are?
@Op: Don't let little pricks bother you. Not many ppl like him, and he/she leads a miserable life. Ignore.
Your TC is incredibly low for your yoe at fang- you’ll look back at this as a good thing in retrospect.
tbh that’s my base i didn’t feel like doing the math for equity and bonus
It’s a good base and even better with your yoe and non tech! (26-27 years old and making that much) I believe you will get a new job with a good base like this too.
Don't worry about it too much. I have a friend who has a good rating and also got laid off.
Your manager is playing a double game, he knows he has to put some one in low perf, and conveniently chose you as you are a noob
Sorry to hear op. Your manager probably wasn't trying to trick you and was being honest - he was not involved in the decision for layoffs. Hope you get back on your feet soon.
It’s weird. I think it was probably because they were new… How was the decision made?
Probably their most recent rankings
