I am seeing multiple posts where people seemed to have laid off without notice. I can't imagine myself waking up to see I have been laid off without any warning. This seems so unfair. I am not able to believe this is true. It looks like their access was removed and lay off email was sent in the middle of the night. That too for people who have worked a lifetime at Google. Is this true? They should have at least had a conversation with their manager or higher ups before receiving the email #layoff #google
Yes. That’s how layoffs were handled. :(
Can do that for a few hundred people. Can’t scale it up for few thousand
It’s true and there’s a big random aspect to it. I was impacted and had only positive performance reviews and was up for promotion. On the other hand, a large set of people were given support check-in (precursor to PIP) in the past few months. I honestly thought they were going to PIP or layoff those people as they were an easy list.
I was in the same boat at Amazon. I was literally in the middle of writing my promo doc when I received the role elimination email. Meanwhile, engineers that were on PIP weren’t let go.
They'll be PIPed in the next round. You really think companies were done with the firings?
100% true. This is exactly what happened at Meta. You can blaim our consulting friends at places like McK and Bain. They wrote the playbook.
How were they handled at MSFT last week? Genuinely curious
Business update meeting, on teams all the participants were on mute and HR declared the news. Those who were impacted had 2 weeks of corporate access. So people who were impacted are available on IM , some of them are offline but majority of them are available for chatting. Supportive environment. But layoff packages are 🥜 🥜 🥜
I don't personally know anyone who was impacted. But I received a few emails from people who were impacted. From what I know, those who were impacted were contacted after Satya's email was sent. They were also given some time I believe to look for opportunities internally.
It’s odd. I just got a recruiter email from Google asking me if I want to interview there (SWE role)
Companies that lay off thousands of employees have to do it this way. If they took the approach where a manager sits down with everyone who’s impacted, the news of layoffs would leak to the press before managers got a chance to let everyone know. By sending out an email, it lets everyone affected know at the same time without any press leaks. In addition, the reason access is taken away is to avoid theft of IP or sabotage. Sure, most people wouldn’t do that, but if you lay off thousands of employees, it’s bound to happen at least once. It’s a good security practice to shut off access immediately. It’s a horrible thing for affected employees, but I can’t think of a better way of handling it at such a large scale. What should happen though is a meeting with a manager and maybe HR after the layoff email is sent out. That way the employee has a chance to understand the severance package and can ask any questions.
Why don't you ask some of us impacted in 2009 when thousands were laid off from Microsoft how it was done? With a lot more dignity. Stop giving this methodology a pass.
I've also been at companies where they did it one by one and the entire day was excruciating waiting to know if you were axed. The email all at once is much better for everyone.
Not a dumb question and yes they did.
If someone has important sensitive personal data on work computer (for example - passport), what happens to those? If the PC is wiped, then it’s safe, else it could be in the hands of new employee (or whoever uses it).
But then there will be very critical work which a person might be doing. How will they hand over the work ? That's why there is notice period. My company has 90 day notice. So that if i resign they can find some one in 90 days. Why they did not allow notice period ?
that means no one is doing critical work 😏🤣
