I'm an incoming SWE and need to pick a laptop. I dislike the MBP keyboard so I'm leaning towards Linux or ChromeOS. For anyone who has recently gotten a Linux laptop, did you get a Lenovo Carbon X1 as the form suggests you will be getting or something else? Thanks!
Can you get the X1 Extreme? It’s bigger than the Carbon with the same keyboard. Highly recommend.
The preference form says "X1 Carbon or similar." I'd like to hear from others if there's a chance to get the Extreme 😲
Arent you connected to a larger monitor plus external keyboard anyways for 95% of the time? Really worth determining your OS because of the built in keyboard?
TBH, I prefer Windows as my OS and hated working with Mac at my last job. However, I know Googlers basically just run a browser on their laptops anyway so it probably doesn't matter. I thought that since the desktop is supposed to be Linux, it'd be most convenient for me to program my keyboard and mouse to one set of key bindings and get it over with.
It is unusual to find a SWE that have a preference for Windows, specially if you do a lot of backend.
I really like my Pixelbook, but I don't think that's a choice now.
The form says that choosing ChromeOS will result in a "Pixelbook or similar." Did something change?
Maybe you'll get a Pixelbook Go - those seem quite nice actually. We also have high-performance HP Chromebooks that are supposedly pretty good. But the 2017 Pixelbooks are, well, from 2017. Generally you are going to get a device that is on the market at present.
Interested in this as well! How is gLinux for laptops ? Also what gen of thinkpad are we getting these days ? Thanks!

Is "From the River to the Sea" So Wrong?
Just curious why would you dislike MBP keyboard? Its the best I've seen
Thinkpad keyboards are way better.
At my last job, I had a MBP16" and really missed the tactility/firmness of keyboards from my Surface Book or my mechanical keyboard. It just felt bad to type on.
