Does anyone at Google NYC have any insight on engineer headcount? When I asked my recruiter about it month ago, I was told there was no L3/L4 headcount. I heard from someone who had interviewed a few months prior that openings were coming, and that there was a backlog of people waiting to team match. And during my onsite, I heard that a new office building had just been opened. If I were to get another FAANG level offer, would that be effective in getting G to find me a position in NYC sooner than later? Would it be helpful to try and find a position myself by networking with current NYC employees and asking them to put in a good word for me with their managers? Any advice is appreciated!
Literally zero for L3L4, I don't know why is this given their expansion in NYC
So all ppl there r L5+?
They are hiring L3/L4, your recruiter is lying to you. I know multiple people who started at Google NYC in the last couple months and starting this month at L3/L4
To clarify, the recruiter who said this was a technical sourcer. Once I passed the technical screen, she sent my profile around to NYC senior recruiters and the feedback she received is that they are focused on recruiting candidates with 5+ years of experience (L5+ probably). But that's a good sign if new L3s and L4s have started recently. It means there are a few spots in NYC office and I've got a chance at getting one. Thanks for sharing!
It’s pretty impacted space wise, so that’s probably the main limiting factor. L5+ and higher is a bit less common to hire so there are probably just less candidates filling those spots. That being said there are L3/4 joining regularly so I don’t think there are 0. Just there’s a lot of competition for those spots.
Thanks for your input! I'm interviewing with two other FAANG level companies right now, both with positions in New York. I would take those offers over G in the Bay if I got them. Do you think sharing that with my recruiter is an effective tactic to get priority in team matching? Do you think it would be helpful to network within G NYC to try and get introduced to hiring managers directly?
If you wouldn’t take a Bay Area position they’ll only try to match you with nyc teams, but it won’t prioritize you with nyc teams afaik. And regarding networking, it might help but it isn’t a silver bullet. Unfortunately you’ll probably just have to wait it out to try to get a match, and you may end up having to cut it short and go with another company if you get other good offers. Do you know what level you would be coming in as? I think there are more L4 positions compared to L3 that I’ve seen (I could be wrong though).
Literally everyone wants to be in NYC, but the space is very limited. Unless they build new buildings it will remain impossible to get in there.
does NYC have lower tc than bay area
No NYC and Bay area have same TC.
I've been in team matching for 2 months+ for L4. I was told a month ago that there were no L4 positions currently in Google NYC, but that they were expecting this to change eventually. They wouldn't be forthcoming with me on when exactly this would happen. Ended up taking an Amazon offer instead.
That's too bad to hear, though hopefully you're happy at Amazon. Did you give them an ultimatum such as "find me something in NY soon or else I'm going to Amazon?" Or did you just get fed up with waiting? And were you always interviewing for the NYC office or were you open to others?
