Got offer for data scientist level 4. I was hoping to get L5 tho. What do you think about the offer? I know I did very well in interviews. Any tips for negotiation and bring it up to $300k per year? Details: Base: $173 (plus 15% annual bonus) Equity: $218 in 4 years (33% first and second year) Sing on bonus: $10k First year salary will be: $277k YOE in the US (excluding my PhD): 4 years #datascience #google
I feel like thats somewhat low TC $277k for bay area. Check levels
Yeah very low for bay area.
That’s way too low. I’m IC5 at 300k fully remote no PhD. 7 yoe. Not Bay Area. Possible ways to negotiate— tell them you have competing offers or got competing ranges from other recruiters, tell them you got IC5 offers, tell them you’re losing x amount of bonus, tell them plainly you need 300k. But if 25k in comp is really a dealbreaker for you, you could try for 350k at other companies
Thanks so much! Just this is L4 offer, but I guess you’re comparing with your IC5 (L5?).
It’s not that low for L4. Idk why Atlassian is talking about
I think its good offer and they will not nudge. If you can take the risk to walk away then it might change something.
Have you already given them your “comp expectations”? They base offers off that + interview performance. If not, anchor high.
Did you ask about refreshers?
No. Should I ask about it at this time? Could you explain more? My info on refreshers is super low. Thanks
Yes you should ask. Refreshers are new RSUs granted every year to top off the RSUs that vest in your original grant. If you received 100 RSUs that vest 25% each year, at the end of your first year, you’ll have 75 RSUs left to vest. Refreshers are given to offset the cliff that will happen on year 4. Generally at Google, each refresher can range from 10% to 30% of your original RSU grant, which will vest over 4 years themself
it seems low. You should try to get RSU to 350k and sign-on bonus to 25k at least. Base seems reasonable for L4 and they won't change that
How to do that when I don’t have a counter offer?
difficult without a counter offer I agree. Good luck
Phd with 4 years experience should be at next level. The leveling and comp both seem to be off is your case. You will get better offers with other companies
PhD with 4yoe isn't a slam dunk for L5 tbh Google often tries to downlevel to L4 for 6-9 YOE
Phd is a glorified diploma for sitting around in class too long. Doesn’t carry weight it once used too.
