How does Google offer negotiation work in the backend? Does the recruiter go to compensation committee each time to increase offer based on what the candidate is saying?
Recruiter, comp team (decide your worth based on interview perf, background and competing offers), hiring manager (can push for higher comp by making a stronger case), hrbp (make sure there are no salary inversions) and svp approval (for out of band comp approval) They try to keep the number of back and forth conversations to three.
My recruiter said they are trying to get override approval too match my other offer. Thing is my other offer is TC 320k and my level is L5. So that should be well within the range. I feel it's just gimmicks
Standard l5 offer is around 275k. If you are not from fang, that will be the default package. Recruiter has to go back to the comp team with evidence and request for a higher comp. It may not require VP approval as 320k is not a lot for l5.
Also, recruiters have discretion. They can bump your comp a certain amount before they have to go for approval. I got an extra 20k on my grant just for asking.
Great, How did you negotiate?
At the end of the offer call I literally said to her: “I noticed you started the conversation with the numbers. Thanks again for the offer. I’m wondering how many people negotiate the offer.” She said, “let me see what I can do.” The next day she sent the letter with the 20k bump bolded in the print.

Yes, it looks that way. But I’m not sure how often they’d go back and forth. Recruiter just went back to Comp team once so far for me, based on my initial feedback.
