So, one of my close friends is working at Google for 2.5 years at L5 level. They are hardworking and delivering what is needed. Director came from Microsoft, very opinionated and think that my friend is not a good fit for future of their team. My friend is asked to look for a job internally and move as soon as possible. If my friend doesn't find a job in 4-5 weeks then they will open PIP and force my friend out. So, I want to ask Googlers, how does it work? Do people on PIP get any package?
Getting piped at Google sounds like an achievement worth putting on your resume
If they offer a PIP exit package and they're talking fit, I'm immediately pivoting to interview prep or planning my sabbatical.
And this is exactly the reason why PIPs don't work. A smart exec should realize this. The director probably wants a specific archetype of worker. They will disregard the existing skillset and knowledge of the existing worker because they don't know if they can drive this person to the ground. Management will use it to hide their own weaknesses. Welcome to BS management. Google isn't the place it used to be
The most mediocre managers do this. Unfortunately more common than you’d think. Seen a lot of talented people get steamrolled and lose confidence because of shitty managers
On the positive internal transfers are easy at Google if you have good feedback
Sounds like an opinion not based in fact.
I googled “PIP”. Now what should I do?
I heard it’s 60 days to finish a project, or 2 months severance. Tbh I like the team being honest like that, much better than those pip designed to fail you, wasting both sides time. Finding a new team within a month is still feasible for now.
In this situation, the Director doesnt want to keep the person, so the PIP is to get rid of the person not to give opportunity to finish a project. And they are expected to set a very difficult goal and at the end of it they will say didnt meet the expectation.
I am wondering if taking a subbatical is good idea or will they terminate when employee is on the leave as they did during the lay off earlier this year.
Seen it happen at LinkedIn too, Microsoft director bs management

Why is our country owned by Israel? I don't want my tax dollars fund genocide. How can we stop this nonsense?
Why is he not a fit if he works hard and delivers?
Well, its not about being hard working, even the management ack that person is hard working but they have decided to bring someone else who they think will be better for future of the group (AI expert)
If the manager doesn’t like you, it doesn’t matter how hard you work.
