Google Recruiter pushing GCP team match only

I passed on-site L5, and recruiter is exclusively a recruiter for GCP. I’ve heard a few things about the group, but that’s not a big deal for me, there are a few teams that interest me. But I have a lot of interest for some teams outside of it as well. My specialty is Java backend, but google cloud and infra is mostly C++. Which teams might be doing large distributed systems, highly scalable java services? Recruiter is pushing for a team match in GCP though, and said we can consider outside of GCP later. I don’t want to push the recruiter since I haven’t passed HC yet, and it’s all in their hands and might be told “no teams available”. Is it common to be steered towards a specific group and not have much team matching for outside of that group? I wonder if recruiter gets commission or some sort of metrics on the people they place in their own group, and would have no incentive to hand me off to another group. Should I push the recruiter a bit more, or how should I handle this?

They have tons of openings in GCP. That’s why.

Right... and here I am telling a GCP recruiter, “Hey, can you uh... send me to another group?”

Recruiters are scumbags and Google recruiters are the worst. Ask them to assign you to someone else if they are hell-bent on getting that extra bonus by signing you up with cloud. Their financial incentives are not aligned with your well-being.

If you haven't passed HC, you haven't passed yet.

Haha yeah you noticed that too :)

Right, which is why I said I passed the on-site and later said I haven’t passed HC - which puts me in a very precarious situation. Afraid the recruiter will just toss my profile if I cause too much trouble.

Yes

Why are you team matching first? Aren’t most people HC first? Asking cuz my friend is waiting for HC decisions and haven’t done team match

Honeywell wellHoney OP May 30, 2019

I’ve heard mixed. Some do HC first some do team matching first. Sometimes it’s just in parallel. They said they prefer team match first so that you can get manager sign off / support to increased the chances.

Gotcha! His recruiter didn’t offer that option :( but good luck to you!

I had the same impression...if recruiter are gcp specific I think their target is to fill positions within the teams they recruit for...so no incentive to match you with other orgs

@wellHoney - can u give overview of ur interview - how many rounds? My interview is scheduled between 10 am - 2:45 pm.. includes lunch? Does it mean 5 rounds? How many are system design vs coding rounds? Thanks.

Honeywell wellHoney OP Jun 18, 2019

Sure. For an L5 it includes only one system design. Mine started later so mine didn’t include lunch. I had one googliness interview first, then 3 rounds of coding and one system design. 5 total.

Please report back and let me know how it well. Tit for tat.
