Happy Holidays all. I’m struggling to understand stock refreshers at Google. I understand that they are given based on performance after year 1. But here’s an example that I saw recently... Initial Offer: TC ~ $250k Base: $165k Bonus: 15% Equity: $240k (assuming no merit raises) year 1: 250k (Y2: granted 80k refresher over next 4 years) year 2: 250k + 20k(includes 25% of refresher grant) = 270k TC (Y3: granted 100k refresher over next 4 years) year 3: 250k + 20k (25% of 80k refresher) + 25k (25% of 100k refresher) = 295k TC and so on... is this accurate??
Do employees also get a yearly raise and bonus along with refreshers?
Yes
Always? That sounds like a great deal.
Yes this is correct. After 4 years though you may have a small cliff, as you initial grant goes ways
If you deplete your initial grant after 4 years without getting yearly grants that exceed your initial one, that’s a message that you’re not valued there and need to move on
It's not necessarily true that you're not valued if there is a cliff. At year 5, the refresher you got at the end of year 4 needs to be greater than the initial RSUs you got when you joined + its growth for you to not feel a cliff. As an example, I got $225k worth of RSUs as an entry level engineer when I joined. Also, the initial grants have grown enough that they're worth $325k at year 5. I got promoted twice, but even then, there is no way I'm getting $325k worth of refreshers in one year. Even the best performers at my level is going to be getting less than 200k worth of refreshers. Sometimes cliff just means you got a huge initial grant and/or that your initial grant has grown a lot. But because initial grant is so lucrative, it may make sense to move within 4 years. But it doesn't necessarily mean they don't value you. It's just how the system is set up.
