Hello all, I took an offer from Google specifically for their SF office. I have the option to cash out the relo package (approx 18k after taxes) instead of going through their packaged offers. However, no one is being clear on whether or not I’ll need to move to the bay by July 2021 because their policies might change. Should I take the cash out for now and hold it? Im wondering if I don’t need to relocate I’ll just have to pay back that cash. Any advice would be helpful! #offer #tech #google
Unless you need someone to babysit your move, I'd say take the cash. My relocation process (during early quarantine) was horrible in that many of the vendors were unresponsive or pretty much useless. Only thing I got out of it was the temp housing and the move, wasted everything else. If I had a chance to do it over, I'd take cash. I'm more inclined to never take move option with PlusRelocation ever again lol.
Wow super helpful to read this. I didn’t even account for the possibility of the vendors being hard to work with. Thanks for the tip!
Great info..I was looking for this..I am in similar situation as OP and was wondering which option to choose
Cash is king
Looks like apple offers both cash and relocation services
Take the cash and throw it in a high yield savings, if July hits and you're told no relocation required, move it to your portfolio.
Wow I like that idea!
cash out paid only after you move with notice given 30days prior to move
I doubt they would make you pay back the relocation to be honest. But also just make sure if absolutely needed you can still pay it back.
If you read your offer letter it says you have 90 days after a decision to return to the office has been made.
So I checked and there’s no language about Relocation in the letter
You have up to 90 days after we have a back to office date.
Did they let you take the cashout when you start? Hearing from ELO that they now won’t pay out until you are 30 days away from moving and can provide flight info/proof of impending move. I was hoping to cash and hold as it would be better taxwise this year than next.
Interesting! I was told a month ago when I spoke to the consultant that I’ll be receiving the cash in my first paycheck, so I requested that. Haven’t seen it yet though. I’ll let you know if I do or don’t, but that new policy makes sense. If I can keep the relo bonus and not move that would be amazing, but if they’re going to ask for it back... that would def suck lol.
That’s what Google’s onboarding site still says, too. I’m concerned because Google’s onboarding site *also* says you need re-approval if you don’t finalize a benefit within 45 days and I didn’t get an answer from ELO when I asked about the likelihood of benefits expiring if they put my relo benefit on hold.
My coordinator has said the same. Benefits aren't paid until move date is confirmed
Yeah makes sense. I mean, what if you don’t have to relocate? Then you wouldn’t need the relo bonus. I personally don’t mind that. If I can stay where I’m at then I don’t care about taking the bonus.
yes that is right. I got the same info
How can you confirm move date
The relocation coordinator wants you to talk to each vendor and manage/confirm all the old location move-out logistics, and if taking temp housing, what date you plan to start the short term lease (and also confirming with the temp housing agency that they have availability for your date range).
