“Some of the would-be contractors left stable, full-time jobs once they received an employment offer at Google and are now searching for work in a difficult labor market. Some, who are Americans, said the rescinded offers have complicated and, in some cases, delayed their ability to receive unemployment benefits because they left their last jobs voluntarily, according to several of the workers facing this dilemma.” I get the reality but that last sentence is tragic. https://www.nytimes.com/2020/05/29/technology/google-rescinds-job-offers-to-contract-workers.html
Big deal. They were not FTEs'
No wonder tech gets a bad rap.
They are still people though
Another hit piece from the FAILING New York Times. Many such cases. Sad!
The NYT does put out a lot of hit pieces. It is paywall blocked so I could not read it. Was the headline misleading, like was it a very small percent of contractors, or do you just mean that they always attack tech companies? My understanding is that Facebook has continued to keep the contractors since covid started, but I do not have full details if true. Although they took a hit, I think these companies are in a financial position to weather this period.
“OAKLAND, Calif. — Google, facing an advertising slump caused by the pandemic, has rescinded offers to several thousand people who had agreed to work at the company as temporary and contract workers”
This is the risk of being contractor
Typical victim shaming, just agree that G failed in planning(which is ok as this is difficult time for everyone) You want to have cake and eat it too!!
Shame on Google for failing to plan for an economically-crippling pandemic...
What is a contractor at Google? How do they hire contractors? Interview loops or you would have to go through staffing agency?
3-4 interviews through staffing agency.
Doesn't feel right. Google of all the companies shouldn't rescind offers. Not hiring for future is ok. But not following the commitments isn't.
Don't understand why this makes headlines. Google has honored all FTE offers. I personally wouldn't take a contractor offer from anyone including Google because they are risky.
Noone including Google is immmne from covid slowdown and need to find ways to cut costs where they can https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.cnbc.com/amp/2020/05/06/google-tells-employees-not-to-expense-food-perks-in-work-from-home.html
This is sad and somewhat unjust. This is anti-thesis of Google taking care of its people. Granted, they've not started yet, we still put them in jeopardy. This seems even more unfair because we are taking care of many TVC workers who aren't working (e.g. cafeteria staff and other whose service is no longer needed because Googlers are WFH) and untimely as this comes out in the same week Google have decided to give every Googler $1000 for WFH furnishing. I understand, we probably cannot employ them and I'm not demanding that, but I sincerely hope, we take steps to help these 2000 fellow human beings in fighting the financial hardship we've unjustly put them into.
Definitely sad and unjust. Though we should take some steps to prevent layoffs. Right now, even FTE Nooglers aren't productive because we're not ready for remote onboarding. This was the easiest thing to do.

No company is invincible. Google likes to trim fat where they can too.
