Any tips on which equipment to get as an SDE? I am used to MacBook Pro at Amazon and using a remote linux server for building code occasionally. Are the MacBooks the latest ones? Can I request a desktop just for the yolos? Options:
You get a Linux workstation by default in the office. Laptop is for meetings, travel, and WFH. Most people choose Mac because it’s the nicest hardware. Linux is good too. Bigger screen is better unless you’re a manager and will be walking around to meetings all day (once return to office happens). Definitely do not choose Windows.
Thanks, how does it work for remote? Will I also get a linux workstation?
@alovneicn Because you start during covid, you start with a VM. Your laptop doesn't really matter but I've seen a few quirks with the pixelbook's GPU
Just get the 15 inch Mac. You already have a desktop.
Is it a physical desktop? Can I request one? Is the 15 inch the newer models?
Yes you'll get a physical desktop at your desk location. I don't know about the year of the model. I'm not sure it matters because you'll get what you get, know what I mean? I don't mean to be rude but I'm not sure that Blind is the most appropriate place for these questions. Your manager can and will be eager to answer anything regarding equipment. They'll also be way more knowledgeable about what is currently available. Posting this kind of thing here makes me think there are ulterior motives, though I don't want to make you feel bad about it. I just think it can seem a little toxic to others to see this kind of content all of the time
I ordered the 15 inch MacBook Pro and got the new 16 inch. No desktop for now (because of COVID) you get a cloud server to ssh or use chrome remote desktop into it
Thanks a lot!!
Np! Welcome to Google
I don't have the MacBook Pro choice. I only see a choice for MacBook Air.
