Google SRE leadership

A recruiter connected about several SRE leadership opportunities. I believe that the interview will consist of System design and not coding interviews. I haven’t been coding in my current leadership role for few years. Is it easier to get into SRE roles than SWE roles for leadership? Any help will be appreciated

SRE leadership may be easy to get in but much more tough than SWE leadership once you are in.

I thought SRE (and Prod Eng at FB) you get tested on Linux SysAdmin stuff (filesystem, DNS, shell etc), not on traditional system design (i.e. webapp design).

You definitely get tested for system design for SRE at google and anywhere really. Many aspects of system design an SRE should be better at than an SWE. SE-SRE at google has one sys design, one coding, one leadership (culture fit?), one platform and then either a networking or platform interview. SWE-SRE is the same loop as SWE. The SE-SRE sys design interview I had was to create an OTA mobile OS delivery system. Fuck that interviewer.

Yeah, I had a Google SRE interview onsite where the interviewer tested me on the knowledge of exact filesystem implementation in UNIX, never giving hints, and always expecting me to provide the exact answers. Block stuff etc. It was futile; I actually knew all that stuff and had an A+ in OS design, just been a few years and completely forgot about it.

SWE-SRE manager screen and loop are exactly the same as SWE manager. The screen is coding, one medium/one hard. The loop is management, project management, troubleshooting, system design, coding.
