I’m considering applying for a Google job that has openings in Seattle and Kirkland. Given the choice, which location should I request? I know they’re very close to each other, but how do they compare in housing, transit, safety, facilities, etc?
Kirkland if you have a family, Seattle (slu) if it’s just you. Kirkland is good schools and houses and driving. Seattle (slu) is night life and apartments and public transport
Seattle much better to do things after work. The trip from work to a great restaurant, the stadiums, waterfront, museums, theatre - is all manageable (and via public transit). Kirkland is a suburb, and feels as such. You will visit exactly one bar after work (chain line) 95% of the time. Most of the time you will visit Whole Foods as an exciting evening.
Kirkland is great if you have a family or plan on one soon. Seattle has a night life and is probably more fun for a young person but it has a ton of homeless people everywhere with lots of homeless camps everywhere which also leads to more crime of course.
From a work perspective, SLU office has a lot of GCP while Kirkland is other stuff. From an office perspective, I like the SLU offices more than Kirkland. I prefer concentrated urban offices over a spread-out two-story suburban campus. YMMV. All in they're both considered SEA, so once you hit team match just see what teams reach out. I'd be more concerned about my team's work aligning with my interests and goals than which of the two offices to choose from.
This.
Kirkland is a nice campus with all the amenities. I toured there for an interview and loved it.

Kirkland is an actual place, I thought Costco made it up
Ha. Costco HQ is actually in Issaquah, about 10 miles from Kirkland.
The Costco HQ used to be in Kirkland, thus the Kirkland Signature brand. In 1996 the company moved to Issaquah where it still is today.
