What does it take to get a T5 offer at Google? Everybody that I know of (with 4-6 years work ex) have joined at L4. I checked levels.fyi and the experience for T5 is mentioned as 4-8 years. Is the bar super high? Do they in general prefer lateral hires to join at T4, prove and then get promoted to T5?
4-8 years is probably for people who get promoted from within. External hires need more yoe to join at T5.
Hired as L5 with 11 years experience for me; I got promoted to L6 SWE after 2 years. I negotiated hard and got an offer near top of band, and have always had at least EE. So I'd say for hire as L5 you probably need 8-10 years at least.
Would you share some details about L6 promotion in DM? I’m joining as L5 and want to have a good start.
Did you have competing offers? How much were you able to negotiate?
I got hired as L5 with 6.5 yoe but I'm PhD so I don't know if that counts or not.
With a PhD people typically join directly as L4 . Considering you have 6.5 yrs exp, L5 seems appropriate.
I know someone with 7 years of experience who is now L6. He joined as L3

What happens when most of your team is Indian?
I know T6 from other companies joining as T5. Looks like downleveling happens for all levels.
