What a joke. The creator of this “union” has been at Google for 1.2 years. She has submitted a pathetically low amount of code, and yet she has the audacity to claim “We built Google. This is not the company we want to work for.” THEN LEAVE. You aren’t the coworker we want to work next to. You have 200 members? That means 99.93% of employees aren’t members. You didn’t build Google. You haven’t done shit. You are literally an L3 who deleted their LinkedIn to make it less obvious to outsiders that you are literally a nobody (just like me and all the other new grads) within Google. You probably joined with the very intent of stirring shit up. No, we don’t need / want a union. And you want to take away 1% of our total compensation for your “dues”? Fuck off. https://www.nytimes.com/2021/01/04/opinion/google-union.html Update: There are 280,000 employees and TVCs. Since this 200 includes TVCs, that means 200/280,000 people have joined. That’s 0.07%. There are probably more people at Google who believe the earth is flat than have joined this union.
It’s always people who just joined and don’t even submit code that claim to be “Google insiders” and a voice for employees. 🙄
Huge respect to the founder. She just set herself up for life. Watch out for a book deal. That future LinkedIn title, “unionizer of google, ex google SWE”, is almost unstoppable. Any job she wants, 500k starting.
Wow sounds like the HC screwed up on this one. I thought it was a joke when I read it.
There are some real problems, and the company does seem to be tone deaf at times. But I doubt a union is going to change that very much. It feels rooted in the virtue signalling activism for the sake of activism culture that's becoming dominant recently. Years ago, we folks who actually built Google were wise enough to know that a union probably in the long term will lead to the normalization of benefits in the software industry, and the company actually listening less. My dad had a union because he worked in terribly dangerous conditions for pitiful pay. It's frankly embarrassing that entitled and highly paid tech workers are doing this with their kushy, easy jobs.
😭😭😭 r u trolling? u dont see how much harm big tech is doing to ppl? 😮 without union we have to build dangerous products. im not for union but dont u think as a group (vs just leadership) we kno how to build less harmful product?
I don't think unions will change that one tiny bit. Also, I don't think tech companies are doing as much harm as many people seem to think they are, but understand that this is an unpopular opinion nowadays.
Unions are great man.
“Unionlead here. I am an Ex-Google Unionlead. I bet you want to get into the FAANG companies. Purchase my courses at Unionlead.com and fast-track your career. Also, make sure to check out Brilliant.org/unionlead”
"if you don't get into FAANG, you can protest."
Why does Google need a union? Isn't G it one of the most relaxed, slow moving environments?
It's a huge company with all sorts of issues going on inside it. One has to be careful about hearing a generalized blanket statement and thinking it applies to everyone everywhere. I mean take for example the disparity in pay between men and women. Turned out men were being systemically underpaid. This surely is an issue that a union could have addressed earlier. That said, I'm not super enthusiastic for this incarnation of union as it seems focused on the more social issues which I'm sure are important to some people but may not be effectively addressed by unions
>> Isn’t G one of the most relaxed, slow moving environments? Apparently not slow enough for these SJW types.
Sounds like the founder of this union will have a successful political career with the Democrats.
Or an easier path to become and executive, as she’s showing leadership qualities.
More like on her way to an industry-wide blacklist.
Maybe it’s not just about money, there is a lot of sexism discrimination shit that went on...let’s not forget the scandals the past few years?...what an amazing PR stunt for someone so young! Future AOC in the making!
Who care. Unionization is a good thing for us workers.
Speak for yourself I think it would kill the tech industry. Makes job switching harder. Makes firing non-performing employees difficult. Makes it harder to negotiate salary, etc. meaning that essentially bands narrow and top performers subsidize everybody else.
Why would job switching be harder?
