Current tc at Amazon ~250k SDE 3 here. Got past hiring committee at Google cloud for an L6 role. As I understand it's a staff engineer level. I am not sure of what a good range would be at this level in Seattle. Can others please guide me. I'd really appreciate some honest guidance. Also is Google cloud considered just like Google in the sense if people want to move around, or do you interview again. Thanks in advance.
Google L6 ~ 450-500k
Is that in Seattle?
Are you kidding me?!
Isn't sde iii L5 at Google? How dis you manage to uplevel? Also, yoe?
All bands overlap, there is no 1-1 mapping.
15 years of experience
G L6 is similar to A L7, pay can be +500k
Ask for 500k, settle for 400k. I had an L7 offer from Google, was well over 800k (Bay Area) for comparison. That was above band though. Search for the Google comp ultimate thread on Blind and realize that you need competing offers if you want top of band comp.
Were you interviewed for SWE or SCE? L6 for SWE is a serious upgrade. Please recheck with the coordinator.
Recruiter told me L6 on two separate occasions. I also think it's a serious uplevel
Level is fine . Role matters. Google cloud has many roles which are similar sounding. Congrats if you joining at L6 with SWE team, Awesome job done.
Congrats. 250k for sde 3 at amzn is pretty messed up and you should move right away.
What sucks is external hired L6s (SDEs and SDMs) from 2-3 years ago are making 450-550k easily. But newly promoted L6s get bottom of target band comp. It is terribly unfair and the bands suck.
Comp band @ L6 is large. It will depend on your current employer and yoe. You can negotiate a above band TC but know that you will have a big cliff after 2 years. Don't let recruiter fool you that refresh will make up the gap. The only option is if your manager is willing to bridge it using their discretionary budget assuming strong performance and criticality of role.
I've seen comp in the range of high 300K to 800K for L6
800k is way above band. Google L7 top of target band is in the 700s. See ultimate engineering comp thread for L6 band. I am sure some L6 has received an 800k offer but that was because they were downleveled and had business critical skills and a VP approved it.
I don't want to reveal my current comp but I am afraid recruiter will ask for it. In that case I am adjusting tc so adding 30% on top gets me to 500k.
Just deflect if they ask and say "I am expecting an offer around 500k. I would enthusiastically accept if you meet that number". If they push further, say "I don't think my current comp is relevant to the conversation and I don't feel comfortable discussing that". Because the Googs is a CA company they almost certainly wont ask because it is illegal for them to do so here.
Do you think not revealing my salary is a deal breaker?
As others have said, at L6 you could easily get an offer for 500k+. However there is no reason they will offer that much given your current comp. You could believably stretch your current comp up to almost 400k. Your best bet would be to get at least one competing offer from somewhere that can also offer 500k at a comparable level like FB, Airbnb, Lyft, Twitter etc
That depends on how or if I reveal my current comp. Since I have been arty amazon for long time I have good amount of stock to be vested.
True, if you've been there as an L6 for a while you could believably be looking at 500k TC or more due to the stock price
Congrats!🍾
Thanks bud
