I’m in programmatic with one of the bigger ad networks. But was recently poached by a recruiter to work for Google as their ad ops manager under the GPSE team and its a 12-mth contract, with possible extension. I’ve always wanted to work in Google but is the leap worth it for a contract job? I’m based in Singapore. #programmatic #adops #google
Hmm I’m seriously torn between a good stable job and a dream. If it’s contract based though, are they allowed to terminate me anytime? Googles offer is about 10% higher only. But this is Singapore, we get lowballed like mad here even for top companies.
They can terminate you anytime anyway. Employment is at-will. It's just easier if you're a contractor because they haven't invested as much in hiring you and setting up your employment in their systems.
Go for it, OP. They will convert you to a full-time employee after 12 months if you play smart.
It Is not worth it for contacting job.
I was in the same position recently.. with decent full time job but offered for contract at Google. Everyone advised me against it and told me to "wake up". I say at the end of the day, go with what you want and ignore the masses. I've listened to the people on here on more than one occasion against my gut and regretted it after. Quitting my last job for my current role at Netflix is one of those regrets.
What do you dislike here?
@dotdot12, you wanna put that in their performance review to fire them?
What is the hourly rate?
It’s paid monthly at SGD5000
It’s really low
I heard google treated contractor as second class citizen
There are benefits and disadvantages together. Contractors are second-class citizens anywhere, but imagine any FAANG, where the thickest, meanest, rudest, most self-entitled heads go to work as full-timers. They will certainly treat you like a bug. Humanity among humans is long gone. You could still be lucky, you may have been a false-negative candidate that deserved to work at FAANG, but never got through the terrible Interview game. You may get to work with the most humane team and supervisor and group. So you never know. The good side, you get to work for Google, and you can use that "tag" to gain any form of traction in your career, unless you really think that sort of traction is necessary.
I left a full time job at Walmart for a contract role with better pay, better culture, and a better team. It all depends on what your 80/20 balance looks like. You’ll need to also consider being able to find housing, the cost of housing, and the cost of health insurance. You won’t get the same Google perks as a FTE and there might be a waiting period before you could even convert to full-time if that’s an option. And even if you have work experience, FTE in the Bay Area usually treat contractors as though they have never worked before.
Majority of the FTE treat contractors with both direct and veiled disrespect. Worst part is that you can't report it due to fear of retaliation. The no retaliation rule at Google is a lie. That rule is there only to protect the FTE, but primarily Google and Google HR. They do not convert contractor to FTE anymore. They do not value the work you do for them as a contractor.
In the upcoming recession google will lay off contractors first, just like the last recession. Stay safe until the recession is over, then jump

Yes. Go for it. I've missed so many opportunities because didn't want to work contract. But you have to consider a lot of things like what are you giving up, are you happy at your current job, what's the $$$ difference, etc
