Blind likes to tell you how Google has great engineering etc. and simp on it. AWS and NAWS specially is miles ahead than Google3. 1. Ganpati, wth is that stuff! It's not even competition with IAM. 2. Monitoring is pathetic. Cloudwatch is so simple. Why are there so many monitoring tools in Google in first place?! 3. Deployments - hate all on pipelines you can, once you join Google the first thing you will miss is how bad their CI/CD is, Rollouts and Annealing is worse. 4. Prodspec - you are going to miss how easy and intuitive CDK was compared to defining protos. 5. Cider-V is no where comparable to IntelliJ that you get to use at AWS. 6. Flume - that crap is 2000s, modern frameworks like Spark are much better and more marketable. AWS Glue serverless solves it for you easily. Besides just the tooling, the cloud knowledge is transferable. Google doesn't even use git, it is so internal. Readability & owners is another crap at Google. At Amazon, you can join and start approving code from day-1. What's the use of well-formatted code if that code is stupid?! And you wouldn't believe this - Google regionalization is so poor. Services are allowed to make cross-region call 😭🤮 i.e. One country to another and is wrong on so many levels. At AWS, you can't do such pathetic stuff without SVP approval (which is impossible to get, thanks ex-AWS Charlie Bell). After all these, Googlers have 10x ego that they are at Google and like to call their hiring bar. If they had any hiring bar after 2008, they wouldn't have built so much internal crap. All this for slow promo and low pay than AWS. I regret joining Google so much and I am waiting for AWS hiring to open up so I can boomerang! TC - 400K
Get ready to be torched to hell
You are talking about GCP, not Google core.
I work in Amazon retail and regularly use AWS services (along with other abstracted tools built on top of AWS). Is it the same at G?
No, hardly anything internally is built on GCP. Borg + Colossus are cheaper
I know some incompetent fools joining GCP during 2021. Problem is they will stay there until retirement because its Google.
Not anymore, we imported PIP culture. We also learned that 30% of the time this comes from incompetent management instead of IC. Sigh
How do you know it is 30%? My experience is 100% management issues are the root cause. Usually, management gets the heat that transparently trickles down to actual engineers.
Good to know. Thanks for the info
Go back to the banana stand then. No one’s missing you here.
ya must be the ones people have been saying about toxic googlers.
Simp at its finest
Lol . Ganpati!!
Care to explain what’s this?
Blaze is much much much better than Brazil though.
Can you elaborate? Interested in hearing your thoughts on why
Don’t really have any issues with Brazil so I’m curious as well (never tried Blaze)
All true. AWS will only be getting more powerful with the entire Amazon adopting NAWS. At some point, it will be impossible for GCP to catch up.
How do I work at AWS and not know what NAWS is?
Do a search then
Agree with everything. Joined Google from Amazon. But I'd personally not go back because of the culture. I guess you just can't have the best of everything in one company (though if there is one I'd love to jump). Agree on lower pay than Amazon level to level. But ironically one of the easiest ways to get a level up and tc bump is to join Google from Amazon.

GCP is Amazon’s twin, similar toxic culture. should go to Brain
AWS besides core services, other services use NAWS stack. GCP internally also doesn't use GCP but the same google3 crap. At Google, you might at least console yourself with better WLB. GCP is worst of both world, work on poor tech stack without WLB.
