I found a role at Google that is a great fit for my experience (functional knowledge, industry, etc), but the range for base salary is below my current base (I'm currently at ~30k over their stated top end). Is Google open to being flexible on base numbers, or pretty set in stone? Tc: 350k
Nope. 👎. Expect recruiters to tell you, but WLB is awesome!
What are you doing at visa for 350k TC? And location? Also google base salary does not include bonus which is atleast 15% of base minimum(often higher) so consider that too .. and goog stock is pretty much cash at this point
Product strategy and partnerships, in NY My bonus is generally 25% of base as is. And that also doesn't include stock.
Ah at goog its 25% of base at L7 and above
What's your current base?
220
I was in the same situation last year. Google recruiter tried and got me max base but they had a hard time going over range max. Ultimately didn’t work out after weeks of back n forth
The stock vests every month and is public/liquid... Worry about TC, not base
I worry about base because we have budgeted a certain way for mortgage, kids, house renovations, and other items. So at least in short term it does matter for us.
Arguably base is the most important number if you want to stay long term because everything is a percentage of base: raises, bonuses etc. Cash is still king, though overall I agree with you. And even if it vests monthly, you may join during a period when you can’t enroll in selling automatically for a while, which could result in a TC drop over the months if it’s volatile enough. Not super important in the long run, but if you need cash in the short term for whatever reason, it is impactful.

How much of your household take-home pay goes to the mortgage?
No. Google is notoriously very rigid on base. You’ll have an extremely hard time negotiating on base, even with competing offers. The stock however is very negotiable.
For reference, I joined recently and had very strong results. SH for all feedback except one, which was H. But I had no competing offer. I tried to get them to at least match my old base, which was simply asking for $3k more. They did not. Instead they gave me $10k extra in stock and $10k sign on.
