Recently got two offers and have been debating about which one to go with: Google: Software Solutions Engineer l4, TC 174k, Sunnyvale Bloomberg: Senior Software Engineer, TC 170k, NYC I've never heard about the Software Solutions Engineer role at Google. Job description here: https://careers.google.com/jobs?utm_campaign=google_jobs_apply&utm_source=google_jobs_apply&utm_medium=organic#!t=jo&jid=/google/software-solutions-engineer-professional-1160-n-mathilda-ave-sunnyvale-ca-94089-3379710310&. I'm concerned how technical this role is. If it's essentially a sales engineer position, then I don't wanna go. Does anyone know about this position? The bloomberg offer is a hardcore SDE role. The manager looks smart and nice. My only concern comes from various bad reviews about BBG engineering on the internet. About myself: 2 yr experience. Non CS undergraduate degree. In the recent future want to do a part time CS master. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance!
Go for Bloomberg. Solutions engineer track won’t take you very far. After working for Bloomberg couple of years, try other tier 1 companies.
How easy is it to transfer from solutions engineer to swe?
Well, there is always uncertainty switching from solutions to SWE. You will get calls from FANG while working in Bloomberg, for sure. I don’t see an issue why you can’t crack one of those interviews again.
Hmm I think you should go Bloomberg. But TC seems kinda low for Senior SWE, new grad offer was 130k last year. Seems like you have experience, you should try to bump those numbers up if possible.
Are solutions engineer on the same ladder as swe at google? This seems like a full stack role though
Bloomberg gives senior title after 2/3 yoe so it depends on OP’s experience as well
Don’t take Solutions Engineer role all you would end up doing is speak and all you would chase is your sales target. Better be a software engineer and work on the technology
It just seems like the solutions engineer role is so different from different companies. The recruiter mentioned once that this role won’t talk directly to customers. Which confuses me on the nature of the work
Sounds like a role where you write code for a specific customer at a time. If you want more technical challenges go for traditional SWE
I have said before, if you wanna work in fish pond go to Bloomberg
Definitely Google - and then move into a SWE role in 1-2 years
What did you decide OP
Bloomberg
Do you prefer NYC over Sunnyvale?
not really. NYC has more cosmopolitan feeling, while sunnyvale has great tech opportunities. no preferences at all
Well goog is more reputable so
