Hello, I'm joining Google as an iOS SWE. I got the form to select my laptop preference and the two Mac options are "Standard. 14" Mac OSX (MacBook Pro or similar)" and "High Perf. 16" Mac OSX (MacBook Pro or similar)". The trouble is I really really hate the 16" MBP. It's too heavy, too large for most backpacks, and the space below the keyboard is too wide so the bottom edge digs into my wrists when I'm typing while it's on my lap. Does anyone know what kind of specs the "standard" 14" MBP option has? Is it possible to ask to be sent a 14" MBP with the specs of the 16" MBP option? TC 175k -> 350k (6yoe) #google #swe
Normally I'd tell people not to worry about processor/ram specs because you don't compile on your laptop, you compile on your physical desktop or cloud desktop. *But*, I'm pretty sure, iOS dev is one of the exceptions. I'd ask your hiring manager (recruiter can give you their email if you don't have it) what most on the team use. ie, is the 14 "good enough" or do they all have the 16 because the 14 is too slow or does your team get a "special" config because you have to compile locally?
I just got my standard 14” in the mail. It’s a 2021 M1 Pro 16 GB ram 512 GB SSD— basically the base model.
That’s what I figured. Are you going to use yours for iOS development or something else?
Nah, I just like macs. I know a couple of iOS engineers who have Mac Pros at their desk, so I’m sure google will give you what you need to be successful.

The standard spec is 16 GB RAM M1 Pro. If you want better specs you have to go with the 16".
What does the 16” high performance one have?
You can “Google” it
