Starting at Google soon and torn deciding about the laptop. Tried to see them at Best Buy, the X1 isn’t coming until next month. I liked the MBP 14 yet that’s not an option. Working from home everyday with docking station and external everything, and planning to use a few work-from-anywhere weeks and travel. Frontend web development and some Java too. A few questions: Linux Lenovo X1: Does the cpu fan rev up? I’d rather not hear that. Does the linux distro support fractional scaling? I’ll be using one external monitor, 100% is too small and 200% a bit too large. I read folks had issues with video chat slower/clunky, newer laptops too? Given the lower CPU power: all compiling is done on a remote server, that includes things like linter and autocomplete suggestions, and for Java too? MacBooks Pro: They are all M1+ now, not Intel, correct? Some folks are getting 14” when selecting 13”? Did you get 13/16 and wish had gotten the other one? The 13 has only 2 ports, and I need more (power and hardware key already take 2), though this is not a problem if I use a USB hub, right? The 13 MBP is almost 2 years old, how quickly would I be able to upgrade to a new one? Thank you for your advice! #google #laptop #noogler
I also do frontend with a little java, everyone on my team uses MacBooks. One person had a pixel book for a bit, but then got it switched to a MacBook. AFAIK they're all M1+1 now
X1 extreme or carbon? I have an X1 extreme as my personal and I hate it. Shit battery life, hot as fuck and loud fans. I had an x1 carbon when I worked at Bloomberg and I liked it a lot, but only 16GB of ram made it chug with VMs sometimes
Carbon
Bayer to google, nice job. Finally your RSUs will move in the right direction
“MacBooks” is where it’s at. You said it right yourself.
The mid to high end MBP won't deliver until late June or July.
Are you at Google? What would I get meanwhile?
Got a 14” mbp, you haven’t started and thinking about an upgrade already?
Start with the MBP. You can easily exchange within 30 days if you don’t like it.
I had the same choice and chose 13" on the assumption they will give me a 14" MBP. I guess the 15" would be the 16". All assumptions, there's no way they give intel, and no way they give MBA for engineering.
Just received my 14”. Basic model, M1 Pro 8/14 core.
Did you guys selected 13’’ for having 14’’ as 14’ is not an option there
I’m at meta but mbp 16, what’s the q
What is a q?
You don’t know what a q is but you’re gonna be at Google? Jeezus
