I read rumors online about Google exploring options with its Android division (along with Pixel), notably spinning it off or selling it to someone (probably Samsung). Given the recent layoffs and Google's desire to be an AI and only AI company, this doesn't seem too far from reality. Thoughts? I think it's stupid and shortsighted to sell Google's only hedge against Apple totally suffocating their ad revenue.
AI-enabled company. I doubt they would shed the #1 mobile operating system in the world and lose that control. Pixel? maybe.
Stupid if true.
That's not happening. They have multiple verticals invested in Android: phones, TVs and cars.
Doesn't preclude anything. Spin it off and take it public for cash, sell it to PE for cash, sell it to Samsung for cash. All of the above could include a perpetual license and patent grant.
It's too big of a funnel for search. Again, it's not happening.
Where did you read this rumor?
AI and AI only company…. Lol
I feel bad for them
Typical blind nonsense
Why don’t you post links to those rumors. It sounds fanciful
I wonder how much revenue Google even makes off Android? I don’t think they have any hedge against Apple suffocating their ad revenue currently. Googles ad revenue isn’t very app based to begin with. Android was a nice idea but I think it needs to become a closed system to really compete with Apple. I’d look into switching off an iPhone if Android could be better tailored to specific hardware. Samsung is probably the right place for that to land if Google isn’t up for doing it themselves, which they’ve sorta shown with how they’ve handled (or should I say fumbled?) the Pixel.
Maybe Microsoft can resurrect windows phone
What I’m suggesting is basically what Microsoft tried to do with windows phone but failed. At least they would have a successful os to start from.
