Google manager vs. SW?

I've never been a manager formally, but I've been a team lead (and several other leader positions). The recruiter is giving me the option of applying for a manager role or a software engineer role. I have prepared for LC (and passed the phone screen) but have no idea how to prepare and what they ask in manager interviews. Can some managers please help me understand how to prepare?

Recruiter offered you EM option without you having any people management experience? ๐Ÿคฆ Please don't go for EM. HC will likely reject and even if you pass and get an offer, think about this: Do you think you can manage career of several people (pitching for them during perf and promo time in a large committe, coaching them to grow, understanding what projects & opportunities are best for them in that very particular place in their trajectory, etc..) in a new and unfamiliar organization? If you like EM, best way is to try it in your current team, ideally with peers you already work with as your reports for at least a year, then you will be ready.

Thanks. As I said I had people management roles but not in tech. In tech I was team lead (software engineer). I'm more positive to go with software engineer role too, but I just wanted to know what kind of questions I should expect in a manager role.

Sorry, it was not obvious from your post that you have had direct reports before in non tech. If you prepare by thinking about what you have done in the past that relates to management, you should be able to answer their questions.

SW is probably more profitable, but you need to get tested regularly. At least itโ€™s tax free!
