Google negotiation

Jun 14, 2019 28 Comments

Google offered me an L6 instead of downleveling like they have many others that have posted. I assume I got L6 because I did very well in my interviews. Does this in anyway mean they are more willing to negotiate to a number that I want?

I am not happy at all with their initial verbal offer.

I have on-sites with other companies coming up so I can get competing offers. Again going back to my question whether the L6 has any weight on negotiation?

For greater clarity, this isn’t an SDE position but GCP tech sales

Why wouldn’t you post the offer? You’re not the first MSFT to Google L6 offer. Sharing the numbers benefits the community and provides some value to us in return for helping with your question.

Did they move Austin to the SE when I wasn’t looking?

What do you consider Austin then if it isn’t south east?

Tech Sales is on a different ladder than SWE. The comp will not be the same. L6 TSC ~= L5 SWE on transfer request IIRC. Unsure about comp levels

I never asked for 600K. But want more than what they offered. I don’t want to move.

Updated my original post with verbal offer.

You are my first data point in this case. Please keep us posted on how high you could negotiate.

My tip is to ask for 330k if you want 310k. That too don't waver from that 330k number by more than 5k until the recruiter asks you talk to some director at Google. Even in that conversation, stay firm. Then they will make an offer. Don't budge until you are happy or they tell you that it's their final offer.

What do you mean by “recruiter asks you to talk some director at Google?” Why would he do that?

If he doesn't, then it means you aren't negotiating hard. That discussion is just meant to sell you koolaid instead of agreeing to a higher TC.
