I've been reading on blind for a while now that Google will match your competing offer. I'm very disappointed that they were not able to for me. Competing offer: 320k L6 offer from Amazon for Austin Google offered me L4 in Bay area for 265k. Yoe: ~15 I just don't see any comparison here because of col and taxes. Recruiter said interview feedback is strong and they could bring me back for next level interview. However this is the final L4 offer. I am willing to walk away as I don't see them matching even for L5. What would you do in my position?
And you get to buy a house without putting all cash.
This is a no-brainer. Even if you pass the L5 hiring bar your comp will land at around 300-350k. Even if you land 350k you will make less because of state tax and higher CoL. Also I don’t buy the recruiters story. Someone with 15 YoE would be evaluated for L4/5 with interviewers making a level recommendation.
Well recruiter said there are not enough signals on system design for L5 so I can have more interviews for system design to be considered L5. I just dont see Google paying me around 400k even with competing offer at L5. They could have done that at L4. Seems like Google doesn't really match competing offer.
You have no family, you've been offered 320k to move to a college city filled with college women, it's 80 degrees all the time and you can buy a 5 bedroom, 3 car garage house with swimming pool and shared runway for 250k. I think blues music was created for this thread.
I think you’ve been reading Blind wrong. Google is notorious for underpay people. They consider their “prestige” can be used in place of real $$$. They’re also famous in using their free food to justify lower compensation during negotiation.
Google underpays ? Wow... Looks like a syndrome of "momy...they wouldn't hire me... "
Underpays, relatively speaking https://www.levels.fyi/2018/
If you get L5 offer from Google, they should easily match the comp. Your offer seems great for L4
The L4 offer isn't even great considering they are downleveling you. They tend to pay above band for downlevels usually, not sure why not here. I would take Amazon offer.
Take the extra system design interview for L5. If it does not work out , go to Austin and try for FNG later
This what I'm planning to do
I think the L6 role would be great. You may really have wanted to join Google, but as the offers go, I think Amazon would be great for you. You get paid well and you will definitely enjoy the scope at L6 here than as a L4 in Google. With 15 years of experience, are you really sure you want to take on the L4 role??
why going for prestige when you already have 15 yoe? IMO prestige matters when you are early in your career, cuz you have a long future. in your case, you definitely are not early in your career, what about giving up that prestige shit, take that Amazon offer, you can FIRE with that TC in Texas soon, why bother?
Agreed. That prestige is not worth the difference in $.
If you don't have any ties to Bay area, this is an easy one. Take the Austin offer. 320 k in Austin is a million dollar in Bay area.
I don't. I'm just going for the name and prestige. But it ain't worth so much money.
You would be leaving lot on the table. And Austin has better balance for family.
