Google not matching competing offer (engg)

Mar 9, 2019 59 Comments

I've been reading on blind for a while now that Google will match your competing offer. I'm very disappointed that they were not able to for me.

Competing offer: 320k L6 offer from Amazon for Austin
Google offered me L4 in Bay area for 265k.
Yoe: ~15

I just don't see any comparison here because of col and taxes. Recruiter said interview feedback is strong and they could bring me back for next level interview. However this is the final L4 offer. I am willing to walk away as I don't see them matching even for L5.

What would you do in my position?

You have no family, you've been offered 320k to move to a college city filled with college women, it's 80 degrees all the time and you can buy a 5 bedroom, 3 car garage house with swimming pool and shared runway for 250k.

I think blues music was created for this thread.

It’s more like it’s 90-100 from June to early September. It still gets cold in the winter. It was 28 as a high earlier this week. You certainly will not get a 5 bedroom house for 250k unless it’s a run down dump or out in Georgetown.

Have you checked Austin house prices lately? You're way off.

If you don't have any ties to Bay area, this is an easy one. Take the Austin offer. 320 k in Austin is a million dollar in Bay area.

Google isn’t what it used to be. And hiring quality is on a downward trend. Technically incompetent people promoted to L5, and many idiots being spoon fed L6 career path because of politics.

Umm... 320 is NOT a million dollars in Austin. The housing prices may be low but the property tax is high and so is sales tax

Not a million no, but no state income tax + lower prices everywhere means it will go much much further than the Bay Area, even if the Bay Area offer had been the same TC

    • wait Google's hiring bar went down??

Google hired 20,000 people last year. There is no way to maintain a high bar with this kind of numbers.

I think the L6 role would be great. You may really have wanted to join Google, but as the offers go, I think Amazon would be great for you. You get paid well and you will definitely enjoy the scope at L6 here than as a L4 in Google. With 15 years of experience, are you really sure you want to take on the L4 role??

I think you’ve been reading Blind wrong. Google is notorious for underpay people. They consider their “prestige” can be used in place of real $$$. They’re also famous in using their free food to justify lower compensation during negotiation.

Google underpays ? Wow... Looks like a syndrome of "momy...they wouldn't hire me... "

      Underpays, relatively speaking https://www.levels.fyi/2018/

    This is a no-brainer.

Even if you pass the L5 hiring bar your comp will land at around 300-350k. Even if you land 350k you will make less because of state tax and higher CoL.

Also I don’t buy the recruiters story. Someone with 15 YoE would be evaluated for L4/5 with interviewers making a level recommendation.

Well recruiter said there are not enough signals on system design for L5 so I can have more interviews for system design to be considered L5. I just dont see Google paying me around 400k even with competing offer at L5. They could have done that at L4. Seems like Google doesn't really match competing offer.

Take amazon offer. Don’t join google , they are intentionally down-balling . You can come back to google later as L5 or L6.

They won’t match because you got downleveled. For L5 they matched my Amazon L6 offer.

WLB is good though not as good as Oracle. Impactful projects are a different story. Still looking for mine. Yes, new people are assigned to do things noone wanted. My project isn’t bad though and the team is nice.

So it doesn't help much to find impactful project that you are L5. What's a typical work week in hours.

Other team members are L5s too so I have no advantage. I work 9-4:30 M-F in the office plus a couple hours on the shuttle or from home.

Thanks for sharing. Do you think these many hours are because you are new and still learning few Google specific things/ tools.

Yes, still learning. There is a learning curve with Google tools/frameworks.

I don’t understand why there is even a choice here. I would take Amazon Austin without a second thought considering this bullshit TC/level google offers

why going for prestige when you already have 15 yoe? IMO prestige matters when you are early in your career, cuz you have a long future. in your case, you definitely are not early in your career, what about giving up that prestige shit, take that Amazon offer, you can FIRE with that TC in Texas soon, why bother?

Agreed. That prestige is not worth the difference in $.
