I interviewed for Google and it seems that the results were good and they are moving to present the packet to hiring committee and then to vp and svp. However, they never asked me about my current compensation or other offers I might have (I told them about possible offer from FB). What happens if they come up with a bad offer? I am a senior software engineer at LinkedIn which translates to level 4. I think Google is shooting for level 5 but the thing is that my compensation is on the higher side of my band. I know that because after interviewing with FB last month, their e4 level offer was not matching my current comp so they had to ask me for another interview to shoot for level 5 there as well. So what should I expect from a Google offer?
They talk to you about compensation AFTER HC approves you.
Really? The recruiter made it sound as if after hc they go to vp for approval. Maybe it was a communication issue. Thanks for the info.
Well, that’s how mine went. After HC approval, they talked about compensation and in parallel started my team matching. After team matching was complete, they submitted my final packet for SVP approval. After SVP approval, they started talking numbers.
I wouldn’t interview again at FB. At this point they’ve all the info they need and can make an educated decision.
There’s no harm interviewing again for fb. Most likely they will offer higher this time around.
It's not a full interview just a module that helps the recruiter sell me as E5.
You are not there yet. HC is the main hurdle you have to pass. Once that is done, they will ask you very comprehensively dont worry. Also you are likely to be offered at L4, its untremely unlikely that they hive you l5, given you are l4 at LI bc Google has been known to downlevel. If you are closer to L5, they will offer you L4, but the high band of L4. GL!
Thanks for your feedback. The recruiter said they are going to go for L5 so fingers crossed. But if the comp is competitive does it really matter? There's apparently this manager who is a very high level and is quite interested. Would that affect the HC decision or they don't care about prospective managers?
Yeah, it will definitely help if you have a "strong hire" from the manager, and I think team matching feedback is also considered along with interviews. But I think the manager literally has to vow for you tho. Honestly tho, if you get to team match, you have to majority of your loop voted hire. I'd say you have very high chance!
Question: in this phase, how the prospective employer verifies your existing RSU? Do you need to share all details or generally they just take what you told them and match them with your current level to validate?
From my experience, they just take your for it cause ultimately if you are honest and their offer is low, you should be willing to walk away from the offer.
Just an update for people who read this later through search. I ended up getting an offer in level 5 after negotiating a bit with a 20% bump in salary. I will be joining Google soon.
Congrats. Can you share rough offer details?
200k base / 520k stock / 50k sign-on / 15% bonus target
Just a general advice (it might not work in all cases): 1. Don’t reveal your current comp first. See if they will offer you more than 30% of your current comp. 2. If they offer too low, use your current comp to negotiate for at least 20% above your current comp.
Thanks for the advice. I'd heard that you shouldn't reveal first but was wondering if I get a chance to negotiate. I implied to recruiter about when we get to talk and she said there's no need and goes to vp after hiring committee. 🤔
Btw levels 4 and 5 are still somewhat junior right? I heard msft going to amzn will get 50% pay raise + promotion to sde2. 50% increase would be a really nice target to shoot for.
