Passed the interviews for L5 SWE/SRE at Google, next is team match and salary negotiation. They asked me to give them a number first, which I find a little odd. Remote position. Should I lead with a higher number than what I expect or give them a reasonable number ($350k seems to be average for new offers outside bay area based on levels.fyi)? I have no other offers, just the expectation of a promotion next quarter into essentially the same pay range/level as Google. Current TC (Amazon L5, equivalent of Google L4) : 280k next year, 250k this year, 220k with stocks dropping.
Which specific role? swe and sre don't make the same amounts.
OP, so what was the final offer from Google?
Still waiting, just submitted my comp expectation to them a few days ago.
Cool. What expectation did u give btw?
OP, would you mind sharing the interview experience? How was the SD round? Is it same as normal SWE interview?
Honestly I barely paid attention to system design. It's a big part of my day to day work so it felt easy and natural to talk about it. Leetcode questions on the other hand, I had to study for.
It's also my third interview round at Google, and I think there's definitely an element of luck to it. Some interviewers will be laser focused on your ability to come up with the most optimal solution no matter what and ignore your thought process to get there. On the last round, I guess I got more reasonable ones

If SRE ladder is same as SWE ladder then you can ask easily ask 400+. Levels.fyi is outdated for salary information.
