Google (L3): 190k TC (140k cash) Walmart (L5): 260k TC (180k cash) Current: 143k TC
Is Google hiring again? Too soon..
Google still trying lowball offers lol. Go for Walmart, it is a no brainer
Walmart doesn't have anything to offer other than this TC. Toxic work culture, bad wlb, oldest tech stack. Unplanned work round the year, unrealistic expectations and what not.
That is true but what does Google have to offer in this case. 2 levels down, fear of layoffs which might cost 3-4 years. I would take toxicity over that and switch at the earliest opportunity.
Honestly, Google. Walmarts not bad but Google opens so many doors. I still struggle to get interviews coming from a non FAANG background even though I've worked at a few Walmart adjacent jobs. My friends who worked at Google get interviews so easily it's insane. I haven't looked since plaid though. I could see working at Google 2 years, get a promo to l4 then hop to somewhere for 400k+ as a senior.
L4 won’t give u 400k even with the refreshers. G’s comp is not that strong.
Correct. He said “hop to somewhere [a different company] for 400k+”.
Walmart first and then try L5/6 for Google later
Google is better on the resume but if you need the higher TC (family, etc) then go that route.
Google, you will learn more and it's a better long term investment.
X5 at Walmart is very different from L3 at Google. What is your experience? What do you want to do?
X5 at Walmart is basically staff and l3 at Google is sde2. Level differences are huge imo
Yup, I am familiar with the differences. Do you have the experience to operate at staff level, or will you crash and burn? Do you want to code all day, or sit in meetings all day? That's why I am asking what it is that you want to do.
Walmart, no brainer
How everyone always joining Google at l3
Wonder why you are not asking why x5 at Walmart?!?
@Walmart My experience very closely matches the role and I interviewed really well. It's not that big a change from what I currently do

Go for Google, - better refreshers and bonus - opens more doors - get to work with better tech/ppl Walmart will be a below average experience
So... I should turn down a Staff position at walmart to be an SDE2 at Google for 70k less TC?
That 70k is not a big diff long term specially when you look for your next job. Plus the higher bonus and refreshers will bridge the gap in a year or two especially if you get promoted to L4
