https://nypost.com/2021/08/10/google-slashing-pay-for-work-from-home-employees-by-up-to-25/amp/ So you work remote, lose the free food and perks, and still get a pay cut? Wow
So their comp depends on cost of living of the location the employee is based out of. Seems fair 🤷♂️
Except when you negotiate offers they will say COL isn’t a factor
Who says that? It’s known every location has certain bands. You expect to get paid the same in NYC and the Bay if you lived in Kansas?
Pay what the employee is worth not what the COL is where they live
With that logic most in Bay area will be making ~30% less than what they are making now.
I never thought of that ^ haha
From my understanding they’re basing pay on the market value of people in your area, so I think the headline is misleading. The article even states that your pay won’t be cut if you live in NYC and work remote, for example. It seems pretty fair to me.
I'm surprised people think thats an okay policy. You're already costing them less as an employee by not requiring office space or any of the on-site perks. I dont understand the rationale for cutting pay based on COL. The point of working remotely from a LCOA is presumably to make your paycheck go further. What does it matter to your employer where you're located?
Maybe less perks means less tax deductions for google?
But Google is a business and they don’t base their decisions on what they can afford (everything), they base it on your market value. It seems people don’t want to face the fact that their market value goes down when they’re remote. Remote is a more desirable situation. It’s basic supply and demand.
Good! Will be interesting to see all those folks who bailed to Boise Idaho hoping to make SFO salaries.
Idk, I think a lot of ppl are just going to keep their address in SF, rent a room or something
What prevents a bunch of people to share an apartment address ?
The 183 days rule maybe, if you stay in a state for more than 183 days, you are considered a resident, and maybe have to pay income tax 2x
Not at all, you only pay tax in one state. Worst case you pay CA taxes and live in Idaho ….
I can take pay cut for the long-term remote perk
Is this valid in India? What would be the paycut if office is in Bangalore and employee wants to work in another metro city like Delhi or Mumbai?
How are people up in arms about this?!? This is totally fair. A company pays for the cost of labor and the cost of labor is very different between SF and Tulsa. If you want those sweet salary premiums, get your butts back to the office.
Shut up Jeff
This
Good. Google is a business not a charity.
Nice. If Amazon did the same the sentiment would be different. I'm not saying you would say the same, but the general sentiment would be vastly different.
Maybe but I agree with FB too.
