So I had my phone interview today. First question: It was a Medium (on the harder side, maybe even an easy Hard). I found the optimal solution right away. Talked it out and wrote the code (had a few issues along the way but in total, I think it went pretty well and I got a good feeling from it). Since there was time left the interviewer gave me another problem (And said that he does not want me to code it) that was more challenging to me. It's not on Leetcode and I could not find the right solution on Google. I came up with the brute force solution and then with an optimization but the interviewer told me I could do even a bit better. I wasn't able to make more progress since there was no time left. Edit: YOE: 8 TC: ~180k (Not in the US) Update: The recruiter let me know the interviewer was very happy with my performance and that I passed the interview :) How forgiving are they on phone interviews? Is this a PASS or a FAIL? #interview #google #phone #swe #engineering
Generally phone interviews are a lot more lenient. But, if you even partially struggle on the phone interview you need to prep a lot harder for on site to potentially get offer. Good luck!
I did two back in 21, one with missing edge case, second one with 2 solutions and failed. I assume it’s wildly dependent on interviewer. I believe I narrowly failed though because the recruiter emailed me about having the feedback but still waiting on someone 🤷♂️

Edited.
looks like a PASS to me
Which location ?
Google is trash
Rich … coming from Amazon
Mind sharing the questions..?
I’d say pass. I find that I generally pass candidates on phone interviews if I think the candidate has more than a 1-in-5 chance of passing the on-site.
How did you prep for the interview? Just did a bunch of lc?
Honestly depends on the interviewer, I had a similar experience with a Google interview and I passed the first round with a similar experience to the one you had.
