A question out of curiosity. How does the compensation change when one gets promoted at Google? Base salary increase, higher refresher base rate, what else? Does one get new RSU grants, or is it that one only gets RSU grants when either joining the first time or getting a retention package? How does it look like specifically for L4->L5 and L5->L6? What about other faang? TC: 314k
Base salary increase only. You will get better grants and bonuses over the next years But here is a dirty little secret. Because RSU vest over 4 years your TC will slowly transition from L to L+1 over those 4 years whereas a new hire will already be at L+1. In other words you will be underpaid for a while. L4->L5 Base 140k -> 180k Bonus is 15% + multiplier RSU 80k -> 120k I don't know for L6. Numbers give or take 10k.
I worked at Apple for a couple years, I witnessed a couple coworkers promo and they both got a refresher at promo time. If you plug those numbers in that refresher makes up for the transition difference I just mentioned. They don't have the underpaid 4 year transition time.
Time to jump to apple
Happens gradually, at least for G. After promotion your next base is updated immediately to the maximum of (6-7% above current base, a lower percentile of the next level), but your target bonus, normal base merit increase and *next* RSU refresher only get updated during the following comp cycle. It actually takes several years before you reach a “good” comp within the next level band because you’d need to wait for 4 stacking refreshers at the higher target. This is why it is usually not wise to take a downlevel at a place like G or FB with stacking refreshers. The only way you can get paid at that next level right after promotion is if they give you an out of band offer.
Thanks! Do you mean at promotion, it is possible that they give one an out of band TC hike? For example, they can give 500k+ at L5 promotion (which is reached after a few years due to stacking)?
An out of band offer like that is a retention grant approved because you’re invaluable to your area as a high performing L6+ (usually) and you have an external offer in hand. Normally requires Sr Director or VP approval.
