Google quiet layoff

"My friends working account manager at Google APAC HQ said all their sales teams and supports have been informed they will be "offered" to move to respective countries office ( Thailand to Bangkok, Vietnam to HCM, Philippines to Manila, Indonesia to Jakarta etc...) since July 23 and the moves will be made gradually over 1 year til July 24. Of course moving to other countries mean their salaries will be cut ( competitive in Thailand, Vietnam or Philippines but definitely cannot compare to SG packages). All the Epass and Singaporeans alike, either accept the moves or bye bye. Other countries will also have higher income tax than SG. Singaporean googlers are saying not only 50% cut, now their income tax doubled. American expats are even worse. This way Google can avoid an official "layoff" that made them looking bad publicly. NTUC or SG government also can't complain cuz it's officially a restructure shuffle, not a layoff. But the result is all the same. Cutting SG office down to barebone. Some tech jobs will follow accordingly. YouTube tech teams are one of the next. The Google management in SG have been lamenting they can't hire due to E-pass restrictions so the US proceeded with the regional offices plans anyways, saving them lots of costs. 2 birds 1 stone SG Googlers scrambling to move other FAANG in SG but SG Meta people said Meta would do the same sooner or later, especially that the numbers users of Meta products are higher in other countries." https://www.reddit.com/r/askSingapore/comments/18zrr0g/lazada_layoffs_and_ntuc/ I am wondering if it is what will happen for the 30k Google ad sale department?

This was bound to happen. It's actually the fault of SG Govt.

Google will kick out the pass holder first because it received so much tax incentive from SG Gov. Net average tax is only 8% which is super low.

Meta does have more users in other countries since they've failed to capture the young adult market in the US. Surely that means moving to Meta isn't a good option right now.

Meta SG went through a few rounds of layoffs in end 2022 and mid 2023. SG-based Sales teams have largely been untouched. Curious to see if this decentralization away from SG will play out the same. Makes sense to be closer to the clients and leverage that lower SEA comps.

Fault of govt to not give epass easily for high skilled google workers. When local talent is so hard to find in that region
